I knew better, but I thought I'd take advantage of the Black Friday / Cyber Monday 30% at YEAR ONE. I had $623 in parts in my basket and after the discount I saved $186. The discount removed the "Free Shipping" that my order had previous qualified for prior to entering the discount. No big deal, I thought. The only large part I had in the order was an E body rear valance, which although long, doesn't weigh that much.

Estimated Shipping.... $210!

Imagine adding 40% to an order for shipping. I'll shop elsewhere.

shock shock that's a down there Year 1, and you guys (Year1) couldn't figure that out or did you? rant The "discount" shouldn't have anything to do with moving someone back under the "free shipping" limit line.

I remember decades ago they'd ship things in boxes way bigger than they needed to be, which was weird.
Seemed to me they were marking up the shipping, and I found other places with better prices and same stuff.
Whenever possible, I buy from smaller outfits and/or forum supporters, or even Ebay.
Nowadays, size figures more heavily in the cost, so if they're still doing that, it's even more foolish.

I didn't even know Year One was still around. I used to buy from Harden's or The Paddock. It's been 16 years since I finished a restoration though...went racing instead.

Same thing happened to me on a $100 wiring harness.
But discount at the time was 20%, so $80 and they added $19 for shipping.
Small item and it came in a $6 USPS envelope

The only upside is they aren’t adding tax yet

I am surprised you were able to find anything to buy that was not "except from discount".

Yup, that's why I got excited. 3 of 5 items were discount eligible. But in the end....the joke was on me.

I forgot to mention...$210 was the ground shipping. They wanted $1100 for 2 day shipping.

The only thing I used to buy was wiring harnesses from Year One but now everyone sells them.

The worst was when non-computer guys would pay full retail to Year One. Than god there are other retailers out there.

BigDaddy, you should check for yourself what the shipping costs are thru some of the shipping companies. Check Fedex Ground, USPS Parcel Post and UPS.

All you have to do is go online and check what the cost is from Year One's zip code to your zip code, measure and weigh the part and the value for insurance.

You said the largest part was the E body rear valance, correct. Just check what it would cost you to ship that part. Your close to 2500 miles away from Year One's location. That rear valance probably weighs around 20 lbs when finished packaged. The problem is that valance is very large, especially when being shipped close to 2500 miles.

You will be very surprised what it would cost you to ship that part. Not even considering getting the proper shipping box, packaging, taking the package to a shipping company, etc.

I can see your point of the shipping costs. I'm just saying start checking some shipping costs for yourself and you will see what it costs to ship large parts that kind of distance.

Also noticed, your order would have been $24 less without the 30% discount!

Shipping via UPS has gotten way out of hand, especially if it's a more rural area.

I ship out every day and to get a small 8x8x8 box just halfway across Kansas to a couple of small towns we deal with, it's often $40-50 depending on weight (usually less than 2 lbs.)

GY3 - for that, use the USPS Priority Flat Rate boxes - way cheaper, and maybe faster.

It's called "Dimensional Weight" because of the room it takes to ship it not just the weight. It was explained to me long ago, "Think of it as shipping a 100-pound package of lead and a 100-pound package of feathers to Australia and the sizes of the package".

I have no use for the USPS!

Our customers typically want parts next day to fix HVAC stuff.

Not my problem! They are the ones paying for it.

The blame for high shipping costs is directly proportional to high fuel costs .......costs that took an immediate leap almost 2 years ago.

I didn’t even know that YearOne was still around. Last purchased from them around 20 years ago. Though, I did like their catalogs.

I recently used a friend's FedEx account to ship a '67 Barracuda from here (central California) to east Texas. With the inflated insurance the buyer wanted it was around $120. It shipped in a dash pad box which is probably bigger than the valence box, or at least the same size. Year One (and any business with an account) gets a huge break on shipping (and yeah, I gave my buddy $20 for the break on shipping). Dash arrived in great shaped, as well.

Jim that was pretty clever leaving out a word to make me read your entire post to figure out how you shipped an entire '67 Barracuda FedEx and what it was going to cost? Got to the end and it was a dash not an entire car. Silly me laugh2 laugh2 biggrin

This thread has got me thinking of all the car vendors/manufacturers/catalogs/websites that existed 10-20 years ago that are gone now.

I'm not saying don't complain about YO if they deserve it, but restoring cars is not cheap--especially old niche cars like ours.

These vendors have to make some money to stay in business, and shipping is outrageous right now.

Some of the guys on Moparts crack me up--they scream about how much stuff costs and how vendors are ripping them off. And then 5 minutes later they are griping how stuff is low quality, cheap overseas junk. Gee, wonder how it got that way.

It's a race to the bottom, boys.

Just about every week I get a 30% off email

But with most parts listed as Discount Excempt , what difference

Shipping has improved over the years with there pricing

Problem is inflation help destroy whatever little help they tried to accomplish

Have you guys seen the price of fuel ? Do you think maybe that has something to do with the cost of shipping ?

I own my own semi, I have parked it due to it currently not being worth it to use. I would rather go broke at home than on the road somewhere. I know others whom have done the same so it is not only myself who is doing this, or will be soon doing this.

No doubt shipping is expensive, but I think some vendors just don't try and do anything about it.

I know Motion Raceworks recently said their shipping costs were going to be lower because they had negotiated better rates with UPS (I think).

However I am sure if a vendor does not have enough volume this is not possible.

Seems some are missing the rant point of your story. It's not about the current increases in shipping cost due to uncontrollable issues like fuel cost or supply chain issues or anything else.

Let's first forget about the Black Friday 30% discount and we go shopping anywhere and see the basic "free shipping" on orders over $600. You go through the catalog and pick out $623 worth of items and one or two of those items are not really needed but they will put you OVER the minimum $600 threshold to qualify for "FREE SHIPPING". You go to checkout and let's say you're doing this by phone and the person at check says "Oh it's Black Friday and you qualify for our Black Friday 30% OFF DISCOUNT!!! I'll take $186 OFF of your total and that now knocks you down under the minimum $600 FREE SHIPPING threshold. And I'm going to now charge you 40% shipping of $210 just to screw you out of thinking we were going to save you money with a Black Friday discount". (What this means is in order to save 30% you really needed to order $180 more or 30% more of things you didn't need.)

"So now you're not getting a Black Friday discount with FREE SHIPPING but we're making an extra $24 on top of it all and making you pay the shipping costs. That extra $24 I'll use to put fuel in my car I drive to work here. Have you seen the price of gas lately?"

Rant deserved IMO. up

I can think of all the NEW vendors that where not here 20-30 years ago.

So if Year One wants to rest on it’s laurels and being a “one time” market leader… well, that just gives room for other new businesses to compete.

I know someone that manufactures a few repro parts to Year One and others. Selling to Year One for 20+ years… things have changed over there.
