There are cars here with "governors" speed limiter on them. Our 2014 Toyota Venza has it and it is set a 110 MPH....don't ask how I know this, Lol.

IIRC Buick had something similar in the 60's(?). You set it at a certain speed and when you went over that a buzzer sounded. Yup, we had a '65 LeSabre with that feature. Can't remember what it was called.

That type make sense to me, they are usually maxed at whatever tire they come with is rated at. Our Dodge Journey would go 118 easily where it hit the limiter. The Durango R/T we got next would also only run 118 lol. We replaced the Durango when it got worth what we paid for it and bought a grand Cherokee, I haven't top speed tested it yet but I am sure it is the same as the Durango and Journey due to tire ratings. I imagine most cars and SUVs today could run 140-150 but they save tons of money by only putting 118mph tires on them. There is plenty of people that don't need to have the ability to go that fast as well!

Doesn't almost every car sold in USA have a speed limiter now?
Facts are stubborn things.

The rev limiters like that are for freewheeling RPM limits. Like in neutral. In gear, they will rev to red line.

Third generation Camaros (80's) had a governor on them. If I remember correctly it was just a snip of a single wire to the PCM to disable it.

Data loggers; aka: black boxes, have been on cars in America for several years now.

The article isn't talking about a Top Speed limiter, but one that signals the driver whenever they exceed the posted limit on the road they're on. I felt that the headline was a little misleading too. But it was what it was and I posted it that way. I would support this kind of warning system if the driver had the option to toggle it off. But I won't hold my breath.

I will try to remember to look tomorrow at my son's van. But I can tell you that it is above 4,500.
