Now that its getting hot I'm finding my stock temp sensor is lacking. I have eddy heads and an old tm5 intake on a 77 360 block. The stock temp sensor is electric and threads into a tiny hole in the intake. The nice autometer gauge I got has a big brass fitting and I don't know where to plug it in.

Where do you all put the mechanical sensor? the side of the block?

Thanks

Kevin

Drill and tap the standard location. You want the temperature probe in the flow of the coolant not T'd off some where where the may or may not be constantly circulating.

Do you mean I should drill and tap the intake maybe on the opposite side of the water neck from the stock sensor?

Isn't there a plug somewhere I can unscrew and screw in the sensor? The water moves all through the block right? I wasn't talking about a T...

Anybody else? Where did you put yours?

Thanks

It's been awhile, I once drilled and tapped a stock iron 340 intake for this. It SEEMS to me in the back of my mind that someone posted here that a Chibby/ ?Ford/ aftermarket? stat housing has a tapped boss right in the housing.

You can always do like I have done in the past on race cars, and use the bypass location and eliminated the bypass hose, plugging off the nipple on the water pump.. A small hole drilled in the stat rim allows some flow with the cold engine. A lot of the performance water pumps don't even have a bypass provision.

I went electric as well for this reason. My Autometer sensor fits right in. Plus, I don't want boiling coolant hanging out anywhere near my legs....

Where is this boiling coolant around your legs going to come from???? Mechanical temp gauge is not like a oil pressure gauge. The coolant comes nowhere near the gauge, no closer than with the electric gauge.

More info please:

What electric sensor are you guys running?
Does it screw into the stock port?

Anybody ever use the block drain?

Block drain is normally just as small a hole. Possibly not deep enough for the probe to clear if it were big enough.

You do NOT want to use the block drain to take temp readings

Autometer and others make a 3/8" NPT Temperature Extension or 1/2" to use for this problem, I have used them in the past they work ok http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessorieslist.aspx?pid=14

Great link, on another page they seem to have the fine thread to 1/2 NPT adapter.

Last time I put the mech probe in the heater hose outlet (I think its the same size).

Then for a heater line, drilled and tapped the smaller hole one size bigger, so it was still within the boss.

I know some blocks still have casting sand etc. in the water passages- is it ok to drill and tap the intake while its installed?

I'm thinking about going with the autometer electric gauge. It comes with a sender 1/4" npt. should be easy to drill and tap. That way I can still run the stock sensor- redundant I know but I can't stand to have it dead in my dashboard...

Thanks

Why is your coolant boiling anyway?

I have yet to understand why such a large bypass & I have blocked it(no problems) & as Moparforlife says use it for a gauge location. You want the sender location as CLOSE to the stat as posssible(thats pretty much the hottest point).I would not drill shavings into the intake & the coolant will be hotter elsewhere than it is at the block drain.

This is how I do ALL my motors. I pick mine up at HomeDepot or Lowes. Any hardware store has them. Pull the plug from the intake (or just drive the car there, you will need a regular hardware store for someone to come out and look at it) and bring the temp unit with you and they can fix you up.

The adapters have a lip inside so the tube and fitting seal. Most parts places have them.I installed 3 or 4 on SBs and at least 3 on BBs.My local Advance has the adapters.Like a couple of bucks I think. That and drilling the intake if you have to has nothing do do with any metal going into the engine unless you intake is pouring water into the motor.Rocky
