Absolutely amazing. I love shipwrecks that still resemble themselves from their active days. Those men on that expedition were so not prepared for what would come.
Keep old mopars alive.

Cool! 100+ years at the bottom of the ocean and it still looks great. Yet my wooden fence and deck starts rotting 5 minutes after I finish putting it up..

Very cool to see a wooden ship in as good condition as that after all that time. Almost 2 miles deep, and landed mostly upright!
Any one else think it ironic for an icebreaker ship to be from So. Africa? I wouldn't have been surprised to hear, Alaskan, Russian, etc, but SA?
It takes gasoline to interest me.

Was 107 years ago. Probably not much specific to make it an icebreaker other than a metal strip on the bow.

South Africa, South America & Australia would be most practical and the closest to the south pole & Antartica

Makes you wonder what else is down there, that's even older. I bet Keith Richards would know.

Freezing ice cold water does wonders in preserving wood. 3 things take out wood, air, water or bugs. Remove any of the 3 and wood lasts a long time. One reason lead paint was so good (killed bugs and sealed wood from air) posts from an old pier under water line are still there and bugs hate redwood, Spanish cedar or any wood with oily sap.

The story behind that ship is truly amazing , what those men endured
Against The Ice is another true story about a ship frozen in the ice outside Greenland , years before the Endurance - Great story about what those two men went through for a couple of years Netflix

This quite a timely discovery for me - I'm just finishing reading the book "The Seven Seas" & the book covers the geography of the different oceans, covers the weather patterns, & very heavily covers merchant shipping starting back as early as 800 AD & up to current. I think the book was written back in the early 1950's. By the time of this shipwreck which was "modern days", trust me, the ship captains & crews knew well about navigation & what they were getting into. They routinely sailed to the North Pole, the South Pole, & everywhere in-between - it was lucrative business all over, & worth the risk. They were procuring seal skins, walrus tusks, whaling, spices, rum, etc. Every part of the world had their own specialties & a ship could bring back lucrative treasures. Countries funded & sponsored voyages, with a certain amount of the cut going to the rulers, kings & queens, etc. There were many famous ship's captains that were held in high esteem by their countries of origin. As far as sailing into cold climates, sometimes they would get socked-in by early ice, or they might get off-course & get trapped by the ice. They were generally prepared to hunker-down for a year or so & wait for the ice to melt & then they would continue. There was even a ship builder who designed a hull that would lift-up & ride above the ice, rather than stay down in the water & get crushed by closing ice. Lots of interesting stories. This particular ship (I did not read this article yet) may have been crushed by the ice & subsequently sunk with the crew long abandoned from it. I'll read the story later when I have more time.

Cool stuff, it is amazing how stuff can survive depending on the elements.
Check out the video of the russian WW2 tank being pulled out of the mud after 65 years and they got it running shortly after. Being incased in mud kept it in great shape. The nazi's had captured it but then sunk it in the mud when retreating.
Also, check out the Bugatti in the lake in france. Didn't do as well but a very cool story.

Was 107 years ago. Probably not much specific to make it an icebreaker other than a metal strip on the bow.
The sunken ship was not an icebreaker the ship that found it was. ENDURANCEThe ship was launched on 17 December 1912 and was initially christened Polaris after the North Star. She was 144 ft (44 m) long, with a 25 ft (7.6 m) beam, and measured 348 tons gross.[2] Her original purpose was to provide luxurious accommodation for small tourist and hunting parties in the Arctic as an ice-capable steam yacht. As launched she had 10 passenger cabins, a spacious dining saloon and galley (with accommodation for two cooks), a smoking room, a darkroom to allow passengers to develop photographs, electric lighting and even a small bathroom.
Every detail of her construction had been scrupulously planned to ensure maximum durability: for example, every joint and fitting was cross-braced for maximum strength.
