In CA I used AAA, got a quote from AAA here in Michigan today that was twice as much as CA. I realize that's just the way it is with this stupid no fault B.S but curious who you use, want to shop this around.

I use auto owners for my dailies and home. Spent years with allstate and AIG. Younger people and people with questionable driving records usually find Progressive quite affordable.

I've been with AAA here in Michigan for ~40 years. For the coverage I've got, nobody has been able to touch what I pay. I have 2 friends that are independent agents and they couldn't understand how my rates were so low. Anybody else I know has had experiences like yours. I know they reward not having any claims.
When my dad moved to Arkansas, AAA tripled his rates. They said he crossed the Mississippi, so his history with them did not count anymore. Not sure how much truth there was to that.

What anyone else pays, and with whatever company they use, has zero bearing on what you will pay. The same company may charge you more for exactly the same coverage than they would charge me, while another company may do the opposite. Nothing anyone tells you here regarding rates is worth anything. Shop around, get quotes from multiple companies for exactly the same coverages, and you'll have your answer.

MI has a lifetime injury coverage component or something like that driving up the costs. It’s a pretty eye popping number. It’s way more than no fault many states have. Pretty sure that the only state with that extra cost.

I want my fair share

HIGHEST in the country. Michigan sux. Ohio below us pays HALF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our family car insurance bill, with kids, is about $7000.

Oh and the GREAT part is, the Detroit Mayor even admitted on local news, he said "65% of Detroit residents don't have insurance or a valid drivers license". Son in law LEO said is WAY HIGHER than that. So a few years ago on a Detroit highway someone pulled a Pitt Manuever on me. No insurance. They sued my insurance company for my car being in their way while they were doing 90 in a 55 with her pregnant 13yo daughter (you can't make this stuff up). If you aren't legal, HOW THE HELL CAN YOU BE ALLOWED TO SUE?!?!? Should be in jail.

As a transplant (32 years ago), I'm STILL shocked every time I open my insurance bill. Family back home simply cannot believe what I pay. There is absolutely NO justification for the way legal/honest motorists are treated in this state. As soon as retirement comes, I'm outta here. My son already left when he graduated (Florida), and it doesn't look like my daughter will be coming back when she graduates (Tennessee). Illinois has it's own issues, so I won't be going back there. I'd love to go back, or stay here. But the messed up way both states are run just doesn't make it a reasonable choice.

MINIMIUM name brand insurance on any car is like $1100 or $1300/yr for basic, no fault. In Ohio it's HALF that. HALF. Just across the border.

MI's no fault laws with uncapped PIP benefits are the reason why. No other state with PIP has uncapped benefits.

In Michigan we ALSO pay $200/yr/vehicle for "UNINSURED MOTORISTS". WTH does that even mean?!?!? If I have to shell out $7000/yr then why are people allowed to drive around illegally? So I pay $1000/year to cover criminals.

We need modern technology where your car is wont start if you don't have insurance.

My son in law said the police cars now have the capability to check for valid insurance when a plate is run. I say IMPOUND THE CAR. Don't let them drive away with a ticket that will never get paid!

And yet, it's still a $300 dollar ticket written purely at LEO discretion for not having a stupid #$@@@ing piece of paper that says you're insured.

Yay for technology!
Now, let's pretend we don't have it to make a few more bucks.

In Illinois, as badly run as it may be, this policy concerning car insurance might be good. https://www.illinoispolicy.org/star...ois-car-insurance-could-end-in-100-fine/

I'm no expert but they did change the law in 2020. Some people are eligible to opt out of the PIP completely if they have health insurance coverage that covers injuries from auto accidents.I pay $210/year on one car with no collision but I do have comprehensive which seems reasonable to me. In March the State is refunding $400 to drivers who had car insurance on Oct 31 2021 due to a surplus in the catastrophic claims fund. Even with that Michiganders still pay some of the highest rates but we seem to be moving in the right direction finally.

In a state where 30% of the cars are running around with expired plates (stickers), I suppose the next step would to simply not have a drivers license. Oh wait, there are a bunch of those people driving around as well. Expired plates, no drivers license, why would you be concerned about not having insurance? Probably has no job either. Laws have no effect on those that don't care about the laws, it only messes around with the people that are trying to do the right thing.

I wonder if that was one of those laws they passed at 11:30 at night, after they called for a special session that started at 10 PM?

USED to - not anymore. Our governator saw to it that this was a thing of the past. MI. was the only state with this type of law. Oh, and our rates did not go down any because of this!
