Wow that was great. I of course especially enjoyed the cars but also many things. The overall cleanliness of streets, the way people took a bit of pride in how they appear in public, and more observations that may border on getting political so I'll leave those out.

Kind of need to pause each picture and look at it , lots of stuff we will never see again in them

That's what struck me, the overall cleanliness.

Definitely! I paused every single one in order to read signs, look at cars, people and everything in the background!

Absolutely I noticed this as well, plus I remember as a kid these things as well - they hit home when I compare the last 30 or so years to the way things were when I was a kid in the 60's & early 70's. People gave a sh*t back then. We were taught to take the grocery cart back into the store, comb our hair before going out, wear decent clothes when going out, etc. Society was disciplined because people cared.

Yes! I wish I had a dollar for everytime my dad said to me "go change your shirt. You're not going out in that shirt" when I was a kid and had a sloppy old t-shirt on and we were going to the store or somewhere like that.

Yeah, the world of my youth; and I'd gladly go back. Thanks for the trip !
Manners & behavior & being considerate seem to have deteriorated hugely since.
By the same token, I was fortunate to be a middle-class white kid, not a black kid in the South.
Most of those places I'll never visit again; they've turned into sh*#holes where being in the wrong place at the wrong time can bring disaster.

I agree with most if not all the reply's...a simpler time. Today people don't seem to care about one and other, not deeply but even superficially. In the past you made your self presentable when you went into public as a sign of respect not only for your self but for those that you were going to be around. You spoke respectfully not only as a sign of intelligence but not to offend others within ear shot. Courtesy was a way of being... made others days just a little bit easier. Now F bombing in public conversations , cutting people off in traffic, just general rudeness and even farting in public seem to be the norm and accepted behavior. OK rant off cool pics of days gone by though up

Agreed, a time long gone, that never will be repeated.....I have to laugh at individuals who make comments "the good O'l days weren't as good as we recall them to be", .....bullcrap, yeah growing up/living back in those "days" had its issues as well, but NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING back then compared to the decay, deviance, strife and chaos that is today's society....

30+ minutes or more well spent grin Like a lot of members I paused and even went back to compare previous photos of the same place but a different point of view. The Camel cigarette billboard in Time Square gave me a chuckle as I remember the fake smoke coming out of it with a different face laugh2 Checking out all of the cars and trucks. Then reading and re-reading the marquees and signs for what's to eat or buy or who's playing in Vegas or Reno, and remembering the one summer (break) working on Steeplechase Peir in Atlantic City for money to buy another bigger motorcycle....THANKS for the Memories as they say up

The pictures that are in the post are magical in a number of ways. For me, growing up in the 60's was a joy.

The pictures don't show all the cigarette butts on the ground. If one was 65 years old you were likely at death's door, sure some lived longer, but life was pretty tough. Smoking=lung cancer, and a lot of people smoked. When you went to family gatherings, if people had farming relatives, inevitably there was some farmer that had lost an arm in a thrashing machine accident or similar. Rivers burned, air in many large urban areas was awful. Cars were not very safe, people still drove cars with solid steering columns and no seat belts. The interstate highway system was quite incomplete and travel took a lot of time. A trip to Europe was an almost never experience or at most once per lifetime thing. If you traveled you had to stock up on traveler's checks before you went. A trip to Australia or New Zealand, are you kidding? People got 2 weeks of vacation at most. Cancer or Heart disease, if you had either good luck. 1966-1970 probably averaged 500,000 US troops per year in Viet Nam. If you were a minority in the US south, or anywhere in the US, what was your opportunity? People were still building bomb shelters in their backyards. Everyone over 65 had dentures. Most people only had an image of the world from the pictures in National Geographic. Weather forecasting beyond the day before was non existent. If your parents called grandma and grandpa, 3 minutes on the phone was about $ 2.65: no wonder that everyone had a sand timer next to the phone.

Being a kid in the suburbs in the 1960's was great for me. In so many ways ideal, The Beach Boys were young, not geezers, and we had the 1970's to look forward to. Plus halter tops were about to appear.

Dang that's a bummer reality check, and how do you see this glass of water? laugh2

Appreciate the alternate view but I didn't need to relive those days of my youth frown wink
