Mine is a 2004.5 24V. Just had it take a dump on me at 209,000 on Saturday. Check engine light came on. Started losing power and bucking, pulled over on to shoulder as to not want to hurt anything any worse. Had to get it towed back home. Haven't even opened hood yet to fix. I did get 2146 error code. Need to diagnose the issue yet.

Basically its luck of the draw...My '92 motor had 300K plus mi and the dowel pit stayed put, although I did stake it when I had it apart. They really don't push out they rattle loose and fall out. People from all over the country have chimed in about their experiences. I just looked at a post and there were posters from AK, NM, CT, SC, so pretty much anywhere there's a Cummins 5.9. No one is safe!!!!!

Need to diagnose the issue yet. I had that happen to my 2004 two weekends ago. I was able to limp it home though. The next day, it fired up and ran fine. I scanned the codes and got that same 2146 code. I think it is an electrical issue with the injectors on 1,2 or 3 cylinder. I haven't fixed mine yet either - my truck is just a "use it when you need it" vehicle. My truck has 306,000 miles on it - and I always seem to have a random electrical issue going on with the truck. Kind of annoying!

My understanding is it is most prevalent on the P pump engines, but not unheard of on the VE pump engines. My VE has 310K on it now, it has had 1 rear main seal, 1 valve adjustment and 1 VE pump reseal. It doesn't leak, smokes like a freight train and gets 22 MPG on the highway empty. Uses 1 quart of oil between the 6000 mile interval oil change. I ain't touching it until I have to.

..... 12v KDP fix ..., and situation?
Is it more prevalent in a more frigid climate ... with huge temperature changes and ranges ? You say something? Sorry I am hard of hearing from listening to the damn diesel rattle for so many years. KDP is easy fix, just do it and get the peace of mind.
