This could be a funny topic.

I have driven another racer's 4-speed 1969 Mustang 428 cobra jet car and went 0.5 seconds faster than he can drive it. IMO, with a stick shift the driver can be a big factor.

I have been going to the track with my Rt and a friend in their SRT 6 spd. They can not get that car to ET at all. Their best is high 13's so far.The 6 speeds have a terrible problem with wheel hop. It seems to be bothering almost everyone with a 6 spd.

Stock R/Ts have been running those #s in stock form, right?

I know of one in particular that went quite a bit faster than that.

In talking with some LX platform guys at the track, even the guys with SRT's have told me that the r/t's and the 5.7 you get better bang for your buck.

I haven't heard of any impressive numbers out of the SRT challengers yet.

I have an '08 SRT numbered car, auto of course. It is very disapointing the way it runs, I bought the car 500 miles away before driving one, my fault. Very smooth, quiet, handles well, but a pig performance wise. In my opinion it needs a gear change to start waking it up among other things.

It has 611 miles on it, covered up, and has not been driven in two months. So I would agree the R/T is the way I would go if I had to do it all over again, then start modifing it as to not be eaten alive by the Rustangs. Just don't have the heart to be modifying a numbered car......yet.

I am amazed at the price increase from one version to the next, but Chrysler isn't the only one doing that.

Isn't it around $7k more from a base model to the R/T, then another $7k from the R/T to the SRT? That is amost 2 of the base model cars. Yes you do get more "stuff", but is each step $7k worth of stuff? For drag racing, maybe buy a base model and spend the $14k for a race motor.

I think the thing that hurts the 6.1's the most are the heads, they're monsters, once they're stroked over 400" they match the motor well.

The first time I had my 5.7 charger at the track I ran within .07 of an SRT all night but he had 4mph on me, same deal with my truck- It's mostly stock and runs way better than it should considering it's 4740# with a 345" small block.

I saw two Challenger SRT8s run last night, one ran a fairly consistent 13.5 at 107-108 mph, the owner felt he could get better times with different launch results.
The other car was identical (same color too!) but he claimed his car was bone stock yet he ran 12.9 at 114mph.
114 mph!!!!!

I could believe the 12.9, but 114 mph for a dead stock SRT8 seems a bit high?

I have a Tor-red 09 Challenger 5.7 R/T auto and it went 13.45 at 104.88, showroom stock. I also happen to have a Black 09 Challenger 5.7 R/T with a six speed and it went 13.31 at 105.35, showroom stock. The auto was 2.02 in the 60ft and the 6 speed was 2.01. I don't know why but the 6 speed car feels quite a bit quicker but less than a tenth and a half second difference. Both cars together cost $57500 which is only about $12500 more than a single SRT. Double the fun. Also need to mention I raced a stock 6.0 GTO Automatic and it only went 13.78 at 102.xx mph. Also raced a stock Mustang GT Automatic and 13.88 at 101mph was all it ran. Raced both on the same day with the 6 speed car at the race track. So the GTOs and mustangs that are fast, are not stock or are supercharged Cobras or maybe N20 equipped. I just can't wait to whoop up on the new 2010 Camaro SS. I'm sure that the proud new owners will be quite pissed off.

The 2009 5.7 has (basically) a 6.1 port configuration along with variable valve timing to try to get around the monster head deal. I tore down an '09 a couple weeks ago for a peek. The cam sprocket has inner and outer sections, there are oil chambers between the sections in the back, and a solonoid to control which way the oil goes, to move the cam one way or the other. Then there's a big clock spring to hold it in place before the VCT activates, so it doesn't flop around. Didn't get a chance to check with a degree wheel but eyeballing it, it looks like that apparatus can move the cam maybe 20 degrees(?), maybe more(?).

I just got home from the track. My Rt ran 12.80's @ 109~110 all day with the DA anywhere from 2800~3800. There was an SRT owner there swearing I had been inside the motor because he was only running low 14's @ 103. I dont understand why but around here the RT's are faster.

Wow, those SRT times seem real slow. My wife's SRT8 06 Charger ran 14.2 (101MPH)at Bandimere Speedway with a density elevation of 11,000ft. That translates to a 13.0 at around 108mph at sea level. Maybe the motors haven't broke in all the way yet or these guys can't drive......

Finally someone with a legit answer for how a 6 speed R/T will run... That thing is drag radials away from 12's...

Just curious. How much of a beating can these cars take before they start leaving transmission and rearend parts on the track? Will they survive with good tires? How about strokers? Are major chassis and drive train changes necessary?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

How many miles were on the cars when they ran their best ET ?

Your black one is exactly the car I want but whisker delete. Looks awesome !!

The red car had less than 200 miles, still has less than 800 now. And the black 6 speed car had right at 1000 miles on it at the racetrack. The other question about what they can handle before drivetrain failure, I would say don't try sticky tires as the rear in the 6 speed car is allready pretty noisy with only 1400 miles of abuse with stock tires. Time to put it on a lift and clean the rear wheel tubs and make use of the lifetime warranty.

Dan, how did you get 2 cars under 58 grand? Assuming the black car was at least 4 grandish more, thats like 27 for the auto and 31 for the stick car with the 20's, which are both really good deals from the looking around i've done.. did you get an extra good deal buying 2 at once?

Different brand and not totally stock but, a kid on PT.net has an 08 silverado RCSB 5.3 and 3:42's with nothing more than headers and a computer tune running a 13.98.

It probably has more left in it too if it's brand new since he has at least 40hp on the old 5.7's, my 04 RCSB has been 14.2/97mph in current street trim and it's near stock, bone stock with less than 2k miles it went 14.48/95mph.

With about 250# removed, the grille blocked, air filter removed and a Superchips programmer I got a 13.87/99mph, it went a 13.99/98mph with just the Superchips and I started doing everything I could think of to break 100mph but it wasn't happening.
