I do not charge sales tax on anyone outside of Michigan. I checked with my accountant about 6 months ago & he said there is NO mandate that requires me to charge sales tax except to a Michigan ship-to address. Hell, there are states that have different tax rates for different counties. How could anyone keep track of this? It would be a full time job to track & administer payments to the different states.

Yeap, just like the gov-ment: pass a law then expect those impacted to figure out all the details/requirements/work involved. Like an "honor" system; BUT with potential dire consequences if not adhered to. As if to say: "If you need to hire an accountant to process this "mess", it's your problem not ours". Or another: "We just make the laws, how it's enforced isn't a concern of ours". Bunch-a-hooey if you ask me!!!!!!

Yes and we pay almost 10 PERCENT tax.
My last Summit order a nice member in tbe Race Section gave me a 10 percent off coupon code. So I was able to save what the tax was. It was a large order When did Summit start that? They never used to charge tax on orders shipped out of state. I left a set of RPM heads on their counter over that. I told them I was from out of state and they said it had to be shipped to be exempt. No problem says I, Equipment Express is here to pick them up, here's a Bill of Lading. Nope UPS or FedEx only. I congratulated them on their business being good enough to be able to watch $1400 walk out the door and left. In the end I got them from my local speed shop for +/- the same money and he actually appreciated the sale. Kevin

In almost every state now, out of state online sales require collecting sales tax for the destination state. A current "loophole" is reporting/collecting is only required if in prior sales period the vendor exceeded $100,000 sales in that state, ( I believe the threshold only needs to be exceed once to trigger the requirement), and that number and method of calculating does vary state by state. And as stated above that does not mean there is a sales tax exemption, it just determines who collects and remits the tax to the state, the seller or the buyer. I suspect many vendors in our hobby will not exceed $100,000 yearly sales in most states, and will not need to bother with this. I however think it is only a matter of time , that the $100,000 threshold disappears, and the playing field is leveled, somebody like Summit would be very much in favor of.
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

When the law changed thanks to a Supreme Court opinion. They never used to charge tax on orders shipped out of state. That was before the law changed some years ago, been a while since you order online hasn't it?I left a set of RPM heads on their counter over that. I told them I was from out of state and they said it had to be shipped to be exempt. No problem says I, Equipment Express is here to pick them up, here's a Bill of Lading. Nope UPS or FedEx only. I think we know who's the sketchy one in this scenario. You pittance would be nothing compared to the fine Summit would of had to pay if they got caught playing your game, hard to appreciate having to pay a big fine because someone wanted to chisel the tax owed.

I actually like Summit never had a problem with them in almost 40 yrs. The same with Jegs and 440 Source. The tax collection can't be blamed on the vendor.

They could have easily given him a "discount" equal to the tax%. So they lost a potential future customer and maybe many future sales.
