Some of you guys might enjoy this old timer. I've been collecting cars for 45 years, but until now never had a 50's car. For a long time, I've been thinking about what to get, and seeking a good opportunity. Well, the right car finally came along, and I knew right away that it was the one for me! I saw the ad late last saturday night, talked to the seller sunday morning, hit the road right away and drove 11 hours to see it monday morning. The seller said on the phone that it has mostly sat for the last 8 years but runs and drives nice. But when he started it for me, gas was squirting out the vent hole on the fuel pump. So I bought it without driving it, rented a Uhaul open trailer and hauled it home. Fins, bling, dual quad Hemi, and a folding top. I don't think I could have found a better car to represent the 50's in my collection. The new fuel pump from Rock Auto should be here tomorrow.

THAT looks a LOT like Richard Carpenter's old car! I am green with envy! Congratulations!

IF that's the car, it was sold in 2013 (I think) from the Don Davis Collection. That would fit with sitting 8 years. Although I think Richard's had the front bumper guards? Gotta find my pics...

Well your sure picked a nice one to represent the 50s.
I don't know that you could have picked a better one actually.

The 57-59 Desoto verts are top shelf for me , especially in black and gold . And with the Kelsey Hays wires is a huge bonus

I have some ownership records going back 20 years or so, but don't see a Davis.

Looks gorgeous, and the McCandless clan knows them inside out - for that matter, maybe even that specific car.

It seems that DeSoto is becoming kind of a lost Mopar. You hardly ever hear of them anymore.

On the U-Haul, they actually had a 57 DeSoto listed in their computer, and the trailer was approved to haul it. I did measure the length of the rails and inspect the tires, top off the pressure, and torque the lug nuts before I hit the road.

Rino, Yes on the 345 cubic inch, 345 horsepower. The Chevy boys talk like they had a monopoly on the one horsepower per cubic inch thing with their fuel injected 283 in 1957.

I'm with you guys on the color, 100%. I love it! I had pursued a gold two-door hardtop with black trim and was following this convertible that was gold with black trim. I'm glad I didn't get one of them because the colors don't do it for me like this one does.

Topside, I'm too doggone old too screw around. And many painful, missed opportunities over the years have taught me to strike while the iron is hot.

The awesome collection of forward look cars that the McCandless is have definitely comes to mind.

Wow, awesome car you won't see many like it at the shows. It would be sweet to do a road trip in that car across the country to the coast.

I've only driven one of Joel's collector cars, (out of necessity) and that is fine by me. Joel trusts me with his cars, more than I trust me, with his cars.

Thanks, but every time I drive someone else's car, it reminds me, I don't like the added stress.

Everytime I drive someone elses car, it reminds me I don't have to fix it. Ted, I'll take your car and beat it like a rented mule! laugh2

Congrats on getting one of the best looking Desoto's ever made, and a drop top to boot!

Wow, that is insanely awesome.. an icon of Virgil Exner's styling skills, and a benchmark of Mopar heritage.. That is a bucket list car for sure..
When I became hooked on Mopars and started buying books about them at Waldenbooks, I got some great history books covering each and very modelyear of production from beginning up to 1979.

The Forward Look cars quickly became a favorite era of Mopars.. The DeSotos were a class all by themselves..
I believe the Adventurer is the top of the line, with the Sportsman and Fireflite as the next tiers of trim and price.
I love the dual antennas on back - I think only Adventurers got those.

Very cool .. and Congratulations!

There are roughly 30 of these left from 57. They're incredibly cool cars. I had to trade the one I had plus cash to get the 72 Demon from Todd. I have another in restoration now, no clue if it will ever get finished.

Enjoy the car, you'll almost always be the only one wherever you go. Always fun to show people how the exhaust exits.

I remember pumping gas into a 1957 Desoto hardtop car like yours (same colors) that a older lady drove to work every day, that was in 1963. She sold it or traded it in on another Desoto later that year on a black hardtop 1961 with the wedge motor with inline dual quads dual quads up
I should have learned more from her on why she liked those big Mopar cars back then, but I didn't realcrazy

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

The new fuel pump showed up from RockAuto. It looks different, it doesn't have the glass sediment bowl underneath. I suppose I'll put it on there, it will probably do the job. I haven't had time to do anything with it yet, hopefully tomorrow night!

Beautiful car and I bet after diving it (hopefully trouble free) it will take a while to wipe the smile off your face. up

Well, I took it for a test drive tonight and have a to-do list. The driver's side visor won't stay up, the blinkers aren't working, only one tail light on each side works, and the outside rear view mirrors need to be tightened up so they stay aimed properly. Nothing to major. It does drive nice, it's pretty fun to tool around in with the top down!

"Sportsman" was DeSoto's way of saying "hardtop." The models from bottom to top were:

Firesweep
Firedome
Fireflite
Adventurer
