I used to work with a guy who his truck did it quite often, because he drove it to and from work and that was it. These things are pullers and designed to work.

My understanding is they will regen at a set mileage interval regardless of what the DPF fill is. They will also regen when the DPF is "full". Its when they can't complete regens that they have to be manually initiated by the dealer/shop to complete a cleaning or removed and cleaned.

I believe this is incorrect. Regen should never occur under proper use, and is the truck performing a self-initiated preventative maintenance measure. I had my diesel for five years, through multiple tanks of DEF, and it never regened once or threw a code. It always ran very well. The ride on the other hand...

I imagine its possible for it to go through a regen without you knowing it. The only sign my duramax truck has is that it idles about 250RPM faster when doing a regen. My 6.7L ford I had would flash a quick message "cleaning exhaust filter" but if you didn't see it you would never know unless you had the screen set to show instant MPG. My Dad has an 08 Dodge and other than smell you can't tell when it is doing it.

This is just observation, I am not a tech or anything I just have had a decent variety of trucks here at work.

My 06 at 134,000 has had trans overhauled at 40,000, all u-joints replaced, front ball joints at 36,000, just did the heater doors (2 day job, broke 8 years ago), complete exhaust replaced, sliding back window leaked for years (drain holes weren’t aligned) bed fenders rusted out, new water pump, new ac compressor and componites, 4x4 shift rod fell off (plastic connectors broke off) front seat wore out, only one seat motor works, installed the 2 micron filter kit under the truck to save injectors (fingers crossed) rats ate the fuel pump wires on top of the tank, other than that it’s a fine truck!
Oh yeah, still has the original batteries.(06) got 19.5 on trip in Nov. (1200 miles)

If all is working as designed regen will occur as needed (ecm monitors soot load). On the Rams if all is working as designed, and you don’t drive the pickup in a manner that allows regen, you’ll eventually see a message that directs you to remain driving until regen complete.

Check engine light on? Some codes suspend regeneration and this more times than not, will cause more issues to those that keep on driving in hope that it will just get better on its own.

Idle time... never a good thing, but sometimes a necessary evil. Newer rigs engine running in park you can turn the cruise on, push set and “+” and ramp the idle up to 1500 rpm.
