I'm looking at putting together a stroked 383 for my 69 rr. I'm a bit off from building the engine as I am still tackling paint and body. I have 2 383 engines, and a 440 steel crank, cut to b mains and counterweights. The guy I got the crank from also has a set of eagle 4340 h beams, 6.760 length. The rods are used, I don't know if they're worth picking up. I plan on using ootb edelbrock rpm heads, gone over by the machine shop. Not set on any type of cam. I can adjust valves if need be. 1 7/8 long tube headers and 3 inch exhaust. I have an ez efi 1.0 and a performer rpm intake. The car is a 4 speed with 3.23 rear gears. I'd like 450-500 hp, but the car will be almost exclusively street driven. Not a daily driver though. I'd like to know if I'm on the right track

Does your crank still have the Mopar rod journal sizes on it? If so think about having it reground to BB Chevy 2.200 rod journal size and have the crank grinder offset stroke it as much as they can get and then buy a new set of BB Chevy type long rods like 7.100 I beam or H beam rods with 7/16 rod bolts with the standard .990 writs pin sizes. You will need a set of pistons made for this build so it will be a custom built street motor that will outrun every non stroker 440 powered car out there devil
Loose the RPM intake as most EFI system don't like dual plane intakes tsk Contact the EFI system maker first before doing anything on this part of your build scope twocents
If you decide to have the 440 crank offset ground to 3.90 and have the block bored .030 over to 4.280 bore size that will make your motor have 448.9 C.I., if it needs to be bored to 4.310, .060 over stock bore size, that will make it be 455.2 C.I. devil
I had one 400 block pump gas motor that was like your wanting now, stock stroke 440 crank cut down with stock 440 rods, that needed to be bored to 4.375 and it made 480 HP on CA pump swill back in 2002 with w single B.G. 850 CFM Speed demon carb mounted on a Mopar M1 single plane intake low deck intake. It had a set of mildly ported big valve 906 heads, not as good as your Eddy RPM heads with a pretty small Comp Cams hydraulic lifter cam and 1.5 set of Isky ductile iron adjustable rocker arms.
On your deal I would look at using a cam like the Comp Cams high energy hi lift series with either the XE-285HL grind or the bigger (due to the 4 speed up) XE-295HL grind, buy a good set of adjustable 1.6 ratio rocker arms also up
Don't tell any of your buddy, especially the Chevy and Ford guys, what your stock 383 motor has in it other than a mild cam and lifter set up whistling devilgrin boogie
That combination will make well over 500 HP on a good brand engine dyno with a decent tune up twocents

Its got mopar rod journals, cut down .010. Im thinking the 440 length rods so I can use off the shelf pistons. Trying to save a little cash here. Any recommendations on decent rods without breaking the bank? I've got a torker 383 intake if the efi will run better with it. Anything I should be worried about with running a flat tappet cam? Are the comp recommended springs good? Any recommended rocker arms? And is the nitriding worth it?

I just dyno'd a 406(400 at 4.375 bore), with lightly rubbed on steel 452 heads(240cfm at .500), Erson E419115 hydraulic roller cam using solid lifters lashed .008/.010, Isky ductile rockers, PAC beehive springs (I had like 135 on the seat and 380 open and it worked fine), a Performer(not RPM) intake and Holley vacuum secondary 750 out of the box. Icon pistons and 6.800 Compstar rods, it has 8.9:1 compression, it'll run on a rumor of octane. Stock distro with a Pertronix II. Milodon pickup truck pan.

It made 435HP and 440lbs of torque. It had 18 inches of vacuum. It peaked at 6000rpm. Crappy dyno headers I got for free from some dude on C-L when I bought a crank from him.

My opinion, worth what you are paying for it, and considering you are trying to save money. Use the Eagle rods if the guy doesn't seem like a parts breaking schmuck and they're under 250 bucks. Get the ARP2000 rod bolts if they don't have them, since you're going to have to get them sized anyways. Use the ICON IC689 piston in whatever bore size your block finishes at, talk to your machinist. These are available considerably under 600 bucks.

I would stay away from all the machine work trying to get a few more cubes or custom this and that and save the money and put it on a "basic, economy" roller camshaft. Flat tappets are just such a C/F these days. You'll pour money trying to band-aid the things together and at the end of the day you've got a flat tappet. If you use the same Erson PN I did, you will easily have the numbers you are looking for. Another very good option, are the Lunati Voodoo roller packages, very reasonable for what you get. The smallest or 2nd smallest Voodoo roller would be my choice. I would suggest the Mancini/HS roller rocker package, that's a very good deal. Use the Torker with your EFI kit, clean up the runners, match the ports with the gaskets so you don't have giant mismatches, but don't go crazy. S/F...Ken M

I think that's right about what I'm looking for. He was asking 250 for the rods, so that sounds about right.

Assuming you use the 75cc heads, you should, and with a block deck height of 9.960, and a 4.38 bore .040 thickness Cometic C5461 gasket that's 10.5:1 compression. If the block cleans at .965 or .970 that's fine too. S/F...Ken M

The heads are coming from the person I got the car from, for a good deal. I know they've never been run, but I don't remember combustion chamber size. Hopefully I'll have them next week. 84cc sticks in my head, but I could be wrong.

The ic689-030 are $525 +ship at cnc, they are 560g, pin 158g and -4.5 cc
The 440 source equivalent (made by icon) is $600 + ship, 511g with the same pin and -4cc - so better for your build (not by a huge amount), but a bit more spendy....

It would be interesting to look at the 2 side by side

Yeah icon themselves lists the weight at 541gr. Can't imagine there's much difference between them. Those are what I intend to use.

My #s 383/432 Stroker

440 Source Kit

Built it myself - Only the second motor that I have built so was a learning experience

I run the E Street 75cc Heads and Comp XE 275 HL

10.5 Compression - 195 psi cold cranking on all eight
18 initial - 34 total on 93 Octane with 10% Ethanol

Auto - 3:91 Rear

I love the torque on the street - Just getting into the throttle at 25/35 mph is scary with 275/60 series tires out back
Idles at 700 RPM s all day long with 13" of vacuum

Never mind the wrong dipstick bouncing

Awesome looking motor and car. There's enough vacuum to run power brakes, which would be a nice thing to have.

Got the eagle rods. For a roller cam has anyone used the mancini racing coated gear? I've looked at the bronze ones, but would like tobavoid having that as a wear part.
