I need some heat to keep pipes from freezing in a small area where water pipes enter my home from the well. It only happens in very cold weather. It is an area that could easily catch fire if you use the wrong thing that falls over or cannot get too close to things. . Is thermostatic electrical pipe wrap safe to use or is something better available? What do you guy's use? I already have it covered with insulation but the coldest weather is coming.

If you are mainly wanting to keep the pipes from freezing I would use heat trace (electric heating cable). IMO it would be the safest and most efficient. Most are thermostatically controlled. Only down side for you is that ideally you would put it between the pipe and the insulation, not on top of the insulation, so you would have to remove and reinstall yours.

Go to the Grainger website and search "heat trace" Many, many options to choose from.

2nd the heat trace. That's what I was going to say.

Use self temperature regulating heat trace and insulate it.

Self regulating cable needs a thermostat to control it. It still is conducting, i.e. ON, all the time . . . it does not "shut itself off" . . .only regulates the amount of current and hence heat based on ambient temperature. Make sure you get thermostat . . . . follow all instructions. Good luck . . .

There a LOT of tapes that have the thermostat built in. It’s a plastic button at the beginning of the tape that you secure against the pipe and it controls when the tape turns on. These are about 25-35 bucks and typically 20-30 feet.

I have a remote thermometer in the crawl space and it never got below 50 in Michigan. Some people in a trailer/modular home park a mile north of us complained of freezing pipes. What I did was put the 2" thick foam board in the rim joist area and used great stuff foam to seal the edges of the section it was in and also along the top of the block wall where the sill sits. I want to put some foam board on the walls, but haven't gotten to it yet since the temps aren't getting close to the 40's. I do not have insulation on the pipes. I just looked and it's 40 degrees outside and 59 in the crawl and 63 in the house.
