I went and saw that car at the auction preview in Kenmore Washington (I lived 4 miles away) a few days before it sold for $405,000. Car had the black dash pad at the time and people said it was a factory error, sometime since it got a blue pad. I remember sanding scratches telegraphing through the paint above the passenger rear quarter. The $405k shocked everyone. Made the local news.
Drug seizure car, and the seized a whole lot more than that. And yeah....it’s a 71.

I had a chance to buy that blue 71 convertible back in early 80's out of georgia for $25k it had a wrecked front fender with a NOS one to go with the car to fix it!! You sure about that? This car seems to have a pretty well documented history as starting out and spending the years in the Pacific Northwest. Yes it went up there from Ga. I am sure. It got caught up in with the Feds up there and most people know about that part of the cars History and after. I had the original add at one time where it was for sale. I really need to take a serious look for it.

Dad owned a 70 hemi cuda convertible around 1980. We were at Mopar at Englishtown in the 90's when we saw it. Dad walked up and told me he used to own the car. The owner, who I think was wheelchair bound, scoffed at the comment. Then dad gave all the details. The guy was shocked as he had the history of it 2 owners after dad, but not before. A guy in these parts called dad who purchased it for 3500 bucks, 2 weeks later dad sold it for 5500. The car was spread around this guys house. He gathered everything and assembled it so it was a complete piece. Next guy did nothing to it and sold it for 13, then it escalated from there. Was cool to give the guy the history on his car.
Like Dad said, 1980, 2k was a LOT of money, at a time when money was at a premium.

Russell Meyers owned it before the drug dealer (when it was a $250,000 car) - car was once restored in CO then again in CA, but appears to have been an east coast car originally - the "original owner" registered here on Moparts as a "DuPont" once upon a time ..... NOT in the Brothers' Collection

from the 2014 Mecum Seattle auction ad: Documented as the only matching numbers 4-speed convertible in existence, its factory broadcast sheet confirms that it was equipped at the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant with the New Process 4-speed, Dana 60 rear end with 4.10 Super Track Pak, 26-inch radiator and power brakes. Previously owned by Russ Meyer, a famous cartoonist from the Southwest, who later sold it to a buyer in Oregon for $250,000, it was eventually seized by authorities there in a drug investigation and sold at auction for $405,000, both prices were unprecedented at the time.
The buyer subsequently commissioned a restoration by highly regarded Mopar restorer Julius Steuer of Los Angeles, California, who completed the work in approximately 2000. A few years later it was then traded for a number of vintage Corvettes from the current owner’s prestigious collection. For any diehard Mopar enthusiast, the process of decoding the Cuda’s fender tag can best be compared to sitting at a slot machine as it spins out a jackpot; everything is there to add up to the grand prize of Hemi Cuda convertibles. In addition to being exceptionally rare, the car is a visual feast, its code B5 Bright Blue combining with a Black power top and matching Blue high-back bucket seat interior. .

It was red on red. Said it was the first one built (that's what he was told). Said it was first one sold for a million dollars, he thinks. Yes, Wayne Hartye from NJ. owned it years ago. I bought a '70 6pk 4 speed Cuda convertible from him.

The triple red 1970 Hemicuda conv. was owned at one time (around 1984) by Paul Suloff I believe. I took photos of it at a dealer show in Columbus, OH. The car was stunning. I wonder what Suloff sold it for??? (he did not own it for a very long time)

Youz numbers guyz are a hoot !
3.5 then .... whats FMV now ? About 12x your net worth. CLUELESS as usual PacMan ..... You have NO IDEA what my net worth is... To answer my own question... I would imagine maybe the FMV now would be something like 1.5 based on what I’ve seen on the auction block in the last year or so. BUT AGAIN... you numbers guyz would know bestER.... and what I said before was not a diss.

2018? Mecum auction ... what’s it worth today ?? Currently with the trend for hemi convertibles and specialty models in 1968-1971 category, for 2021 estimates, I would say about 15% increase in it's original 2018 price.

I remember reading that magazine test article when the car was new.. And yes the test driver did mention there was a small puddle of trans fluid under the car at the time he picked it up. Joe Oldham???

Hope I'm not hi jacking the 3.5 MM thread, but to respond on the red on red cuda. I owned it for a couple years in the early 80s. Mopar Action did an article on it several years ago which featured the lineage of owners. Called it the $5MM Cuda. I bought it from Andy Boltz who got it from Herb. Andy told me Herb found it in a trailer park. I had several E Body Hemi cars but always wanted a Hemi Vert. Car was apart and I resorted it. Body was amazing, maybe two small spots behind tires, floors perfect. Body work was easy. Back then You had to find parts at swap meets and bone yards. Year One was the only place that had Mopar parts back then, ie seat covers, emblems, decals. Replaced carpet and one seat cover. Arlen Vanke did the engine, Jim Pace fixed the trans and stopped leaks. First show was Street Machine Nats in Indy. I worked for Goodyear so put it in there booth. Hot Rod shot if for the magazine there and it made top ten list in the year end Magazine.
For some reason I wanted a Hemi more rare than 1 of 14. I found a Challenger 4 spd plum crazy car and purchased that in mid 80s, it was 1 or 9. Sold the Cuda to Wayne Hardy for $35K. Then eventually sold Challenger to Bill Drake in up state NY.
Had fun with them, but I didn't have big collections and was always looking for the next challenge. Any car I had that I sold for more than I paid was a good deal, but if there was ever one I wish I kept it was the red on red car. Shoulda Coulda Woulda

The red on red 1970 would be THE cream of the crop for me I agree. The best one out there.
