My car is sitting here ready to fire up but I'm afraid to put water in it as we're suppose to get some 28-32 degree nights this week. I have some antifreeze but then I'll have to mess with trying to flush it all out in a couple weeks. What's the easiest way to do that? I usually just drain the radiator but that doesn't get it all out.

It's spring time in Northern Ohio....why would you need anti freeze?

Easiest way would be to drain the Radiator and if the block still has a working drain in each side, let those babies flow as well.

Otherwise set up a heater in the garage, its really gonna have to freeze to hurt anything.

If you're worried about freezing go ahead and put the antifreeze in. When it comes time to remove it, rig up a garden hose adaptor for your water neck (home depot stuff), pull the T stat and run the hose for a few minutes to flush out the antifreeze.

Yea Jim I often wonder how many people actually drain the antifreeze out.

I know Tony, it's April 8th and it's suppose to be freezing every night.

I'll go fill the system right now with some antifreeze added.

Bob,
I've got some antifreeze in mine right now, but witht the new "lightweight" K memeber from Bonbob getting to and removing the block drain plugs are a breeze, shouldn't make a mess either.

went racing a few weeks ago....and didnt want to run any antifreeze that i had in from over the winter...

I drained the anti-freeze out by pulling the bottom hose, filling it back with water,,turned on my electric water pump x few minutes to circulate it,,,and dilute things out...

It took about 4 cycles of pulling the bottom hose,,,adding water to the rad,,running the pump before i got all the antifreeze out of it..took about 15 minutes total

The weather got cold again,,,,so,,,i put antifreeze BACK in the car,,,,and will have to do the whole process again,,,

i cant to my plugs on the block very easy,,,but that would be even easier,,,

Too expensive to run all the time. I got it filled up and ready to fire, maybe tomorrow after work.

The company next door to us sells and installs portable carpet cleaning machines, the ones in the vans. They use windshield washer fluid to winterize the machines if they will sit out over the winter. Cheap, easy to clean, and 10 times easier to clean up if spilled at the track.....

Just a little helpful info.

i could be wrong, but i believe anti-freeze has a higher boiling temp than water. car can get a little hotter with anti than with water. So i run antifreeze all year!

Ben your post got me thinking.
Has anyone tried this in a race car?
Has anyone ran windshield washer fluid in a race car?

Hey Bob, last fall before the Halloween Classic, my brother and I both put block heaters in our cars. Now, I still had antifreeze in the car for that race, but it would keep the coolant about 140-150 degrees. You know how long it is between rounds up there, so make a pass and plug it in to keep the heat in the motor. Just a note, I got it fom a federated auto parts store for like 25 bucks. Probably saved that in fuel in just that week. Beep

I know a guy who's used washer fluid in his race cars for over 20 years for this very reason.

Bob,
Where is your car parked overnight? Mine is in my garage which is part of my house. I never run anti-freeze, as I don't subject the car to a true below freezing situation.

I thought you were NOT supposed to run anti-freeze at the track ?

Does this vary track to track ??

You're not supposed to run anti-freeze at the drag strip. If you have a coolant leak & it gets all over the track, it's difficult to clean up & increases the down time, due to that. It's kind of a racer courtesy.....no antifreeze at the track.

Waterwetter is good stuff. I swap from antifreeze to w/wetter each year. A real pain, but ya gotta keep cool.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

i read last year a report that claimed water wetter was only marginally better than the tap water sample that was being used as the control. i witnessed a test my buddy did after reading this report where he put an equal amount of WW & 100% antifreeze into 2 cans. these cans were then put on a burner together side by side & the water wetter boiled first. not that this proved much, just that in raw form WW boils faster, much faster actually. made me wonder about WW tho.

But what about it's ability to transfer heat fast/beter than antifreeze or water?

I'm no chemist but I think all the boiling properties change when under pressure. as an example nitromethane will not burn at atomsheric pressure, they put a lit match in a beaker of it but put the match out, but when under many psi it way more explosive than gas.

thats where the water wetter fell short, the antifreeze excelled on thermal transference & anti freezing capabilities over WW. in our country you can name products that you compare yours too. WW claimed their product was the best & named Prestone amoungst others. Prestone agent paid for an independant test & it was proved WW was rubbish. Very hard to find WW now.

all I know is my late model Vette ran 215 all the time all I did was add a bottle of WW and it drop the temps to 200 all the time so for me it work at lowering the operating temp of that car.

Thats all I have in the race car water and WW and I run the fan very little to keep the temp up to 180

I have petcocks on my block. I drain the antifreeze out in the spring and run water with WW for spring through fall

Water Wetter actually by itself doesn't reduce temps. It's really a surfactant agent.

[quoteBut what about it's ability to transfer heat fast/beter than antifreeze or water?

thats where the water wetter fell short, the antifreeze excelled on thermal transference & anti freezing capabilities over WW. in our country you can name products that you compare yours too. WW claimed their product was the best & named Prestone amoungst others. Prestone agent paid for an independant test & it was proved WW was rubbish. Very hard to find WW now.

Water wetter is not an antifreeze. it enhances the coolants ability to transfer heat better.

I forgot to mention...when we did race and all the antifreeze was drained I would use Royal Purple's Purple Ice...its not an antifreeze, its a synthetic that provides lubrication for the pump and it does help in lowering boiling tempuratures...

I like it better than wetter water...

I never seem to have my motor in my car whenit's that cold. Time I get it back together it will be just water wetter time.

All water pumps be it stock or electric have sealed bearings.

If you can dump anything in the coolant that actually lubes the bearings on any water pump, you need a new water pump!.....

Actually the lubricant is for the seal to keep it from "going dry" in plain hot water.
