the transmission fluid thread got me wondering about synthetic fluids.
the question is this.
i have a 440/727 combo that has been run since built with amsoil products in both the engine and transmission.
if it were to be changed to something else, what would/could/should it be ?
i'm not against amsoil products, but just wondering a "what if" situation.
would/could it be hurt ?
as always, a big TIA for helping me understand more ! bow

I have used Amsoil in the past. Great oil, but pricey. Plenty of additives and holds viscosity the best of all oils i have tried and that's a bunch tried. I'm always experimenting with something. To me, next best is Brad Penn. Holds viscosity good when hot as well and plenty of additives alot less money to boot. I can still get that for less than $6/qt. I'm now using the new Driven GP and it gets very thin when hot. Think i'm going back to Amsoil "hotrod/streetrod" whatever it's called in a 20/50 next year.

thanks dave ! it's not like this thing is going to be run a ton of miles, but it will be beat on occasionally.
it also has compression [11.5 : 1] and a choppy SFT cam [268 @ .050] with good springs, so a good oil is a must.
the question was asked because i don't know what weight engine oil was used, [although i know for sure it was amsoil] but i know amsoil "super shift" transmission fluid was used because i got an empty bottle. i didn't know they made that.
i also was trained to believe synthetic transmission fluid was not so good on the clutch packs, so shruggy
i was thinking of changing over to my old standby, type F.
i have been so long without having a running hotrod. i have tried to keep up, but my old mind keeps forgetting what i have tried to keep up on ! laugh2

The Amsoil i used was Dominator 15/50, 15/50 is not available in the hotrod blend, so i will most likely go with 20/50 and my bearing clearances are all about .003". As far as the trans fluid, i have used the high performance amsoil fluid as well, but that stuff is super expensive. I found a case of ATI super F on ebay for $80 so i bought it. Seems just fine. I had walmart F type fluid in it prior to the ATI because it was cheap, but when i added the ATI fluid first thing i noticed was the engine idled 200rpm higher in park and i gained about 100rpm in stall speed, so i believe the walmart stuff must be super heavy. The pan was extra clean though so no problem there.

I've used a lot of different oils in race engines over the last 35 years, Amsoil is ok, but expensive, Valvoline is good but theres something in it that gives my hands dermatitus, Penright was total rubbish, bearings never lasted with that oil, was even sponsered by them & had to decline as it was costing me too much on engine parts. Redline is a good one but Royal Purple is my current oil of choice. Engine noises seem to be quieter with RP, but pressure when hot has been the best of them all.
