That guy (BOYD) had the sleeper thing going for a while. I lost to him off of Whittier blvd after he beat my buddies V8 350 vega. I knew I was alot faster than the Vega so it should be an easy win. Boyd smoked me. He always lifted the hood for you to look painted engine dual plane single snorkel stock air filter A few weeks after I lost to him I saw him at OCIR pulling a low ten with the same car.
Are you talking about Boyd (white over blue '67 chevy II w/pizza box hood scoop?) I NEVER saw or heard of him running faster then 10+ high teens at OCIR usually slower, and I only ever saw that car run all the way out the back door ONCE. he raced a Super Gas car outta San Diego. That Nova had to be a 9.80's car on 9" tires in the early 1980's Other then the hood and satin centerlines you wouldn't look twice at that car to think it was fast.
rumor was he would not open the hood with the good motor. He would freely open it with the other. Still plenty fast... small world
EDIT: you were replying to Steve's post. Ron had the ratty firebird... half the time it had a small block half it had a BBC... Boyd had the Chevy II Boyd was always faster.
It was a white nova and when i saw it run it was at a super chevy weekend at OCIR I could be off on the times but I do remeber it was in the 10s. I did hear alot of rumor or info about him big 400 block sbc with hidden spray and that he would change engines from week to week. I was a kid and he seemed "alot" older at the time kinda like a urban legend LOL
did you ever race 4th street ontario or mission ave/60 or market street near the river in the early 80s

You mean that 67-69 primer Firebird out of the San Fernando Valley?? I just saw that car once after hours at The Radiator Works on Parthenia near Reseda. He was buddies with Jason, one the the brothers that owns The Radiator Works.
Is that Firebird a well known street racer?? I spent my time working on circle track race cars at Saugus Speedway instead of hanging with the street racing crowd.

..I used to think 67-69 Post A bodies were sleepers but if anything they are so obviously NOT sleepers.....much like the 327/375 Chevy II's anyone encountering one is once bitten-twice shy. ...
I agree. You don't see a lot fo 67-69 A-bodies still on the road, even here in So Cal. As time goes on the cars sort of get too old to be sleepers. 80-89 FMJ bodies would be a better choice nowdays.

The FB was RATTY! and I mean RATTTTY!!!! The front clip was half primer and gold and the rest was very faded and beat red. rusty/crusty mismatched cragars and centerlines. Looked like a JY escapee

Boyd was older.. I'm guessing maybe late 30's then ... The rumor was the good motor was a stroked 400 SBC, obviously on the juice. All those guys that were running hard for money had different engines depending on what they were up to. Good times...
No, never fooled around in Ontario... I grew up in OC and Whitter BLVD was the weekend playground. Racing on Shoemaker. About the time I was getting out the drugs and trouble was coming into the local street racing scene... I left, got married young and ended up in Riverside.

Photobucket was down when I posted, it could win 9 out of 10 ugly truck contests. The history of the truck is it started out life as a DNR unit. It was sold at auction with about 45,000 miles on it. The kid that bought it rolled it in a snow bank the first nite he owned it. It went to a wrecking yard were my neighbor bought it for a farm field sprayer. They brought it home pushed out enough dents to get glass back in it and get the doors to shut. They put a sprayer in the back and beat the stuffings out of the poor thing for about 10 years. When it would die they would call me to resurrect it. They finally killed the 318 and parked it for 12 years. 3 years ago my neighbor asked me if I wanted it.....I said how much, I paid 2 cans of diet coke for it. (He asked for 1 but I gave him 2 so he wouldn't think I screwed him). I fixed the brakes, steering, floorpan, threw in a $150 318, $249 GT-45 turbo, wastegate, and blowoff valve. The truck looks truly hideous but has 55,000 miles on it. It drives nice, and if I drive it real nice it can knock down 13-14mpg.Dave

I'm putting together a '69 Valiant 2-dr, bench seat, column shift, has a 408 small block, RHS X-heads with the RHS ground off, Diamond 10-1 pistons, Eagle SIR rods, custom Comp Cam solid flat tappet, LD340 intake, 780 vac secondary, for the sleeper effect, motor should make 475hp range, ( but have a 750 DP and Victor intake). The trans is ProTrans A500 (which has a low first gear) with a A-1 2500 convertor, 8.75 rear with 3.73 suregrip, car is light, manual steering/brakes, on drag radials, I think it should mid to high 11's on the motor thru the exhaust. Just building it for fun, may sell when I'm done, haven't decided. My other car isn't much of a sleeper being LimeLight Green, 4" cowl hood and most around here knows it, lol.
1970 'Cuda,Lime Light,499 Indy S/R's 10.70's @125,street driven ALOT! 1966 Barracuda 360,now a 5spd,Hemi Orange,Hot Rod Air, New daily driver-2003 Ram 2500 Cummins 5.9 '69 Valiant 2-dr, sleeper! New project---1938 Dodge truck, plan is a 360 with a A500, AC, Calvert rear susp., rack and pinion front with coils.
