Went to torque down shock to lower shock bolt on the shock plate and the threads are stripped.
I see Mancini sells a nice replacement bolt for that shock plate.
The plates are nice and powder coated, I really don’t want to replace them - can that stud be replaced?
Is it just pressed in? Hopefully a few walks with a hammer and a punch, and the new one can go in?
I’m sure someone has had this experience here.....
Thanks in advance everyone!

Wally.

that stud may looked pressed in, but in reality, it's welded.
one option you may possibly do to save the plate/bolt assembly, is to cut new threads with a die using the closest size metric thread that is slightly SMALLER than the thread that is there now.
i can't be sure that will work, as i'm not there to measure the stripped thread to see if this will even work, but it might be worth a try.
the only other option is to cut the stud off flush, obtain a "universal" mounting stud that fits your shock bushing [usually available at the parts store or online], and drill the size hole in your plate required to mount the "universal" stud.

I agree with threading it the next smaller size. Iirc, the original threads are 1/2 20 so technically the next smaller would be 1/2 13 due to the smaller root diameter. But, probably sketchy as far as achieving the full torque without stripping again.

Id look at 12mm x1.25 as the best option. You should be able to find a nut with a 19mm hex that would be close enough to the original 3/4 hex as to end up an invisible repair.

The entire stud was broken off on the driver side of my car when I got it. I turned a new one in the lathe, machined the ragged hole in the plate, and welded it back together. You can't tell it from original. If I had your problem, I would cut off the stripped part of the stud at the larger diameter, then drill and tap the stud, and insert a section of grade 8 all thread or a long headless bolt secured by red loctite and maybe a pin or tack weld if you are nervous.

You may be able to get away with running an M12 die over the stripped stub, but you better get it started straight. And that could be a tricky operation.

Shock plate is on the car already - hard to use a tap with everything together.
I may just find a good used one or order new - maybe Mancini?

Just as I'm making headway on the dang car..... mad

Me too! iagree
If your concerned about it not matching your podwer coated plate, paint the replacement part after you tighten the lock nut and before you install the shock. Gene
