Like the show Vintage Voltage?
It looked like one car thet did was shipped to the UK from Cali to get done and shipped back to Cali. So was wondering.

There were two firm at SEMA last year that were doing conversions. If I was able to go to my office, I would send you the PDF of the brochure. See if SEMA's website has a reference to them.

One firm wanted $80K to convert a car.

Can we get the Mexican cartels to help us with our supply chain issues? They don't seem to have any trouble getting stuff from one place to another.

Yes there are a bunch of places around who are doing conversions. Not sure how good any of them are yet but eventually it will catch on. I talked to a guy last year about starting a company to do musclecar conversions. I know that classic Camaro, Chevelles, Corvettes, etc. with the GM electric conversion would sell well enough to make money. The cars end up costing more than $100K but there are enough people who have that kind of money to make the business go.

I'd like to convert my '65 Coronet over to electric but I just don't have enough knowledge to do it myself. If I found a local shop that could do it I'd probably pull the trigger. It would be a nice ride with 400+ hp and a 200 mile range. I'd drive the wheels off of it running errands around town. People would freak when they saw a dead quiet '65 Dodge rolling across the parking lot and then saw it take off.

At the level our muscle cars need power the costs of a conversion will not be cheap even if you DIY.

The Controller is a hard to set up component. Much more so that just a FI tune. It must be matched to your battery system and the 'MOTOR' voltage.
The Battery Maintenance System (BMS) is required to balance the charge of the batteries and the discharge too.
Charger's to charge the batteries and work with the BMS. You will need a few chargers depending on how fast you want to recharge.
Motors... How big? in a nut shell: Volts=Speed, Amp's=Power (Push) A 48 volt 11Kw/h motor will be slower than a 244 volt 11Kw/h one.
Batteries.... Range=A/h, Total Volts=Speed.

Even the best batteries are heavy. I'd bet to power my LRT with enough A/h range and volts it would add 1,000 pounds to the weight in just batteries.

Most aftermarket EV's are minimal shifted gearing. For the city it is around 4.44:1 gear ratio, much more than that and the torque multiplication is wasted. For the freeway a 3:1 ratio will work, much less than that and you are out of the efficiency of the electric motor's power range. So as set of 3.05 Ring and Pinion with a two speed planetary trans that has a 1.45:1 first gear and then a direct drive would work for most. You'd keep it in 1st gear till the motor reached top torque RPM and then shift to drive. No clutches or bands needed.

I've seen conversions where they keep a transmission and conversions where they don't. I own a Nissan Leaf and it doesn't have a transmission. Or at least it doesn't seem to have one. I haven't taken it apart to verify anything. There does not appear to be any shifting going on at any speed in the Leaf.

There is a place in Portland OR that I talked to a year ago and they were just starting to produce electric "crate engines" for muscle car conversions. I haven't checked on them lately but when I talked to them they were aiming for 400 hp and 200 mile range. That was the target they thought would allow them to sell a bunch of kits. I think the kit was going to be $50,000 plus whatever the install cost was.

Andy, the Leaf does have a transmission but it does not shift. Just a reduction unit.

"The Nissan Leaf does not use a typical automatic or manual transmissions. It uses a single speed reduction gear with a final drive ratio of 7.9377. ... Since almost the entire RPM range for the motor produces usable torque, there's no need for a transmission."

This place seems to have expertise in doing Porsche/VW conversions:

Then there's this place from the People's Republic:
