Cracker Barrel is paying their employees, including part timers, during the restaurant shut down in Ohio. My daughter is 16, and works there after school and on weekends. She's saving $$ for college, and though certainly not the same as someone with a family being laid off, it has been a source of worry to her. Out of the blue, she got a deposit in her bank account on Friday, along with an email. The email said that part timers will be paid 50% of their average weekly wages, based upon the past 60 days of earnings. Very impressed that they would do something like this. Many companies that can do something will do nothing.

We as an entire nation, need to unite to do everything in our power to stop this outbreak, as quickly as possible, so that others who are putting their money where their mouth is, can get everyone back to work.

Ie A nationwide full shutdown, "take no prisoners", an "all out war", and be done with it.

Sounds good in theory, but there could be unintended consequences to that. And this is not China or Russia, so enforcing that on the unwilling could be a real challenge.

That's good to hear, man. Unfortunately, we've kind of come to expect businesses to be less-than-caring about their employees (or ex-employees) during hard times, but every once in a while you hear a story like this one. They may not be able to keep it up forever, but it's something.

That's amazing and a good way to retain employees till this is over. It would be expensive to retrain an entire staff if everyone walked.

Well my service manager at the Yota shop will be asking half of the shop to take voluntary lay-offs because of the loss of customer work. I have offered to be one of the volunteers because being flat rate I would only make a few hours a day anyway. Looks like I might have time to get my car stuff done before spring.
It's nice that Cracker Barrel is taking care of their staff it would be great if other establishments would follow this motto but some of the smaller places like the mom-n-pop places will not survive this virus

A grocery chain up here is giving all employees a $2 an hour increase for the next few weeks for the extra effort and personal risk.

Well, The Carstar body shop here said if anyone gets sick and misses work they would be fired. I used to work there too. When my mom passed away in California, I'm in Missouri, he would not let me take off work for the funeral...so just know, those places are still out there abusing the help. The places that are stepping up for their employees and customers will not be forgotten.

The places that step up and take care of their employees will be better off when this thing is over with (and it will be over with some day), because when the day comes they can reopen, they will still have a staff ready to work for the customers that will show up. The paces that do not take care of their people may not have any employees that will come back to work when its over, and they will not be able to serve their customers when they can open. Training new people takes time, and when this is done, the places that can be in full operation the soonest will come out way ahead of those that need to train new people.
I believe those who return to work will be largely based a lot on what came around will go around. Some will come back because they have little or no choice, but those with options may look at other possibilities, especially if they were treated badly at their last job. Gene
