Hey guys - I have a 72 Challenger that I want install a flip top gas cap. I know it wasn't a factory option in 72, but I like the looks. Anyhow, I picked one up from Year One and I'm trying to figure out how the trim ring is retained. The flip top mounts right into the factory holes in the body surrounding the filler neck, and came with screws to retain it. The Trim ring has a small slot that matches a small slot in the cap, but no hardware/clip to connect them. I am an E body newbie, so that might be part of the problem here...Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Tony

It just sandwiches in between the body & the filler... I remember an awful lot of 72-74 Rally pkg cars having the flip top cap...

I was allways under the impression that the flip top cap was only available in 70-71. Is that wrong?

Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but mine is a loose fit and would rattle like crazy. I cut some thin adhesive foam to take up the space between the cap base and the trim ring, and now it sandwiches and stays put. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I put a flip-top cap on my 73 back in the 70's, but I had to go to the dealer to buy it. To the best of my knowledge, it was only available on 70 & 71's...

I think alot of 72-74 owners did the same thing that I did.

I installed mine with small carage bolts and nuts on the inside the trunk in stead of screws. Since some tried to steal it one day.

Me too. I used tamper-proof screws w/ nuts on the back side. Years ago, they didn't TRY to steal mine, they DID steal it. That won't be happenin' again!!!
