Could not find past post/thread regarding moving the tank over one strap to clearence duals out the back. If any one has done this could you let me know about any modifications needed to the gas tank neck if any. Mine dump through the springs behind the tires on the 79 Wagon and it looks so Chebbie Tried sending them back from there but looked too Mustangy Thanks

I own a 79 Volare premier wagon ( 318 )and went through the same girations trying to put dual exhausts on it a few years back. I went and bought a dual exhaust system ( 2" ) for a 78 Dodge pick up truck and modified it to fit. Didn't do any tank relocating. Lots of cutting and fitting going over the axle and between the springs and the body, but I did have enough pipe with the truck exhaust system to get the job done. They exit out-board of the springs and straight back under the bumper. You will be an excellent gas welder by the time you are done!

That's the "Mustang" look the O.P. was trying to avoid. There is room to run a 2.5" tailpipe between the early fuel tank and spring, but there's only 1/4" clearance on either side-- not good.
If you want the exhaust to terminate under the rear bumper inboard of the springs, switching to the later style tank is the way to go. One good thing about this swap is the later style fuel sending units are easily found, and you can sell your old sending unit since NOS pieces are NS1.

On some cars there is a hump on the top of the tank for a vent, with a similar hump in the trunk floor for it to fit into. On my original tank, this area was flat but because of rust I had to replace it.
76 and early 77 F bodies had a "humpbacked" fuel tank and the 2 types are not interchangeable. The filler tube, sending unit and straps are different. If you want to use the later "wedge shaped" tank you should change the trunk pan for proper fit. (76-early 77 left, early 77-80 right)

The tailpipes are Mustang-like, not the vehicle. See here:

Welllllll, you could just dump them straight down aft of the rear tires - or would that be the Chevy look I'm just happy to have one that doesn't have that - rusted out look!

I think I know what the O.P. is trying to avoid, having tried to route dual 2.5" tailpipes on an F-body wagon myself last summer. I think moving the fuel tank over is the best solution in his case.

Very true. I guess that makes at least four F-body wagon owners here on Moparts.

Very cool quick77RT! Actually, I was going to run both pipes out the same side. Glad I didn't. It would have probably looked too much like a Fiat!!!

if you were going to do that, I'd just do what I did on my 5th ave--run a big single-- I've got 2.5" off the headers to a flowmaster Y, and into a 3" muffler, and 3" over the axle. you can fit up to a 4" pipe along side the tank in a big single config. but finding (and fitting) enough muffler volume to keep things tolerable gets hard to do.

I know about the pre-77 tanks. What I mean is there are also 2 types of 77-89 tanks as well. It isn't a big difference, but one type has a hump that sits about 1" off the surface of the top of tank. You have to beat it flat or modify the trunk floor if you want to move tank over the 1 notch.
