I hate installing backbraces, especially on leaf spring rears.

Of course, I always do things the hard way. I narrow the rear fist, then I chain the housing down on each end to my rearend straightening bench. I bow the housing with a couple bottle jacks to compensate for warpage.

It's suprising how "bent" most 8-3/4 housing are from the factory.

You think 8-3/4" housings are bad, you should check out the 8.8 housings in Mustangs.

not much worse really, this is one for a low 7 sec radial mustang

Couldnt you just hook a come along between the bent tube and the center and yank it back to straight?

The tubes on my 8 3/4 were twisted like a pretzel it was so bad from the transbrake the paint was cracked off and you could stand back and see at least 1.5 inches of twist between the ladder brackets. Like the Hulk grabbed it twisted it up.

Ended up sheering a Strange axle clean off in the spool from the misalignment. That was an expensive fix as it broke the ladder bars too. The center section was new though and survived.

Of course my Dana that replaced it eventually broke too ...hopefully it'll be back from the setup shop soon enough. I gave up on trying to do them.

I had to do the same to my 8 3/4 housing.
Chained it to an I beam and straightned it with a jack.

We checked a lot of 8.8 housings at the race car shop. Many of them had the ends welded on crooked from the factory.

Thanks all for the advise and suggestion , I guess I be on my way to my work soon and take out the grinder and cut halfway thru on both sides and use a wedge to open the gap up to get the ends to line up to each other, and carefully weld it.
I have a new drive shaft and axles from manchini and a brand new center section too, so I don’t want to ruin them with a bent housing.

Anyone use the mosier housing? It was not too expensive ether http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku
Are they stronger enough or do they need to be back braced too? I run a stroked 440 wedge (500) with a procharger. 1000+ hp
The Dana 60 would be the best I know but my economy does not allow it at the moment

at the 1000 HP range your going to have big problems if you hook it.

I alway's cut the end's off then do all my welding and brackets, then the last thing you do is weld the end's back on with a jig to get the wheel bearing bores in alignment with the bearing's in the carrier,,,your bearing's and seal's will thank you.

Thats the way I do it, the bearing ends are always
last going on.... by rights that tube could be all
over the place as long as the ends are square to the
carrier bearings and I like the tire square to the car

Well at least two people got the right answer.

Before I would cut the ends off I would try a couple of things first. I just finished welding a back brace to my 8 3/4 and had planned on redoing the ends.

As you know when you weld on one side of the housing it heats up and when it cools it shrinks back shorter than it was before. I was going to heat the opposite side of my housing to "bring it back" until an old toolmaker suggested peening the weld.

I ground an old air chisel bit to a point with a 1/8 diameter flat and peened the weld on the back brace for about 10 minutes and the housing came back to straight. This stretches or expands the weld.

It worked for me and only the mentioned 10 minutes.

Good one...That's one I haven't heard. I have had success with a handheld grinder or stiff wire wheel @ the weld immediately after welding. Seems to relieve stress/alow parts to cool evenly without distortion.

The same guy told me the best thing to keep from weld pull is to peen the weld while it is still hot.

1000 hp stock block 440??

ARP studs, half filled with hard block and Main stud girdle. Hope that’s enough to keep it together

I believe he was referring to the 8 3/4 living but
most likely neither the block or the rear will live
at 1000hp
