I'd leave the vinyl top off otherwise sounds great! Keep the pic's coming.
I know this is gonna sound bad but thats a LOT of $ to put in a 72-4.
Is that the Barrelcuda in the first pic? Still have that?

RESTORATION TIP: Now's not the time to decide NOT to put a vinyl roof on a car. It would cost a lot of money to remove the trim studs, fill the holes and repaint the car. These types of decisions must be made early on in the restoration. This car left the factory black/black vinyl and the owner wants to leave it that way.

If it were me, I'd leave the vinyl top off as well, especially after seeing firsthand the horrendous amount of rust that will form eventually, due to trapped moisture under the vinyl. But, build it however you want!
it would be different if the car was going to be a daily driver. fact is the thing will probably be trailered every where and just sit in a garage when not on a trailer or show field.

Did it leave the factory with a shaker too?

A rallye hood would look just as nice and be correct. I think all black and some 15' rallyes with some meaty sidewall tires or even some 16-17 rallyes again with some sidewals would look better than black steelies.

Is this the car that was a 74 cuda 360-4speed? I would not worry about the hood it can be changed out easy enough 90% of PPl that look at it would not know it was not factory on that car. And a large # would look at it and say look at that old car and not even know what kind it even is

Yep, it's a factory N96 shaker hood car. The original broadcast sheet and fender tag are missing, but one of the previous owners swears it was on there when new...so it MUST be truely a one of one. Oh it's also an original V code 440+6 car as well...

If you don't like vinyl tops, then by all means leave them off, but saying it's gonna rust is a bit of a red herring IMO.
If you're going to rotiserie restore a car, prime the roof, throw a vinyl top on and park it outside for 40 years, then yeah it's going to rust!
I doubt very much that rust will ever be a problem with this car's top again. My car had zero rust under the vinyl when I took it off and the factory had very poor paint coverage. Full paint coverage plus the fact that we take care of our collector cars, store them inside etc. and I seriously doubt the top will ever rust again. Mine certainly won't.

My dad's 73 isn't worth restoring if you are looking at what it will be worth when it's done compared to what it will take to get it done. Is it worth it to me....you bet.
That 74 is looking great. It looks like you sprayed undercoating in the wheelwells. Did you do that after the lines were installed?

5 Hours!
I worked on mine all weekend and didn't get anywhere near that much done!
Next time (if there IS a next time), I'm shipping the whole shebang to your house and I'll pick it up when it's done! I mean it!!

Amen, brother... My 73 Challenger, which I bought in Dec. 73, is just as sentimental to me as your Dad's 73 is.
I spent way more on the restoration than the car is worth. Do I regret it?...NO! Would I do it all over again?...YES.
Fortunately, I was able to get agreed value collector insurance for what I have in it. But I sure can't sell it right now for that amount. But, I DON'T CARE.
I will have the Challenger until I die. Having no kids, my only dilemma is which nephew to leave it to....

First I always love following your work, nothing but high quality work Second MODS Maybe Scott could use a new sub title A great guy with an real eye for detail Third the as to the statement about 72 and up cars vs money to restore them I believe that subject has 2 points of view. Yes when classic mopar muscle cars became part of an investment hobby "money in" Vs "money out" was certainly an issue for those folks. For those of us who simply want to restore the cars we love, sometimes money is not a factor even when we don't have much of it. Some of us do it because of the cars value to us...not everyone else. I never would have believed what I have in mine $$ if my receipts we not neatly organized. Over a long period of time even those small purchases start to sneak up on you Fourth for those who love black cars heres a friends car. I'd say which member built/owns it but did not ask "bugsydogs" permission to post that info so I better not...what a sweet car

Looks like the engine is the wrong color too, but I'm starting to like the owner. He's not afraid to spend bucket loads of money on a "worthless" car to build it the way HE wants it.
Now if it were mine, there'd be some black stripes on it too!
Sharp car, nice work!

Aren't those calipers or is it the hardware, hard to come by?
Is that new stuff or did you refurb it?
I put some Wildwood stuff on the fron of my Challenger which is SCARY under powered and bought some NOS calipers and all the hardware to put on my Challenger (was drums all the way around originally).
Looks good

I don't know about now but...I bought new calipers and brake hoses from Car Quest a few years back. No use buying those things from the restoration companies when you can go to your local parts store and pick them up cheap.

Ok...So I skipped a couple of days, and I don't work weekends so I haven't done a lot. I'm also sharing my time with a full assembly of a 71 Cuda right now.
To date I have 35 hours in the re-assembly.The underside is 100% finished, as is the engine compartment. I started to trim out the body and I have a friend coming over to install the vinyl top and front and rear glass on Friday....

Keep in mind I work alone. I try to keep a steady pace and don't spend too much time scratching my head.
Also keep in mind that these omponets were restored WELL in advance and simply just bolted to the car.
Thanks for all the kind words...

Great build and from what I see, typical of the nice work you do.
I just have one question and I am not dogging this car at all.
I notice that there is a 6 pack on it and that the motor is done up to look very very factory, but to my limited mopar knowledge there was no 6 pack option in 74.
Am I missing something?

I was speaking more of the final body and paint...But during the assembly I sub out the windshield/back glass instalation and vinyl top. Also front end alignment, but that's it.... I wish I could hire someone to keep the dam thing clean...

So what is the address to send a project?
If he give you the address, I will take time off to take it and pick it up.

I'm looking for new cars as early as this Summer...
Looks great Alan.
I always thought you make the best use of hrs for their customer out of just about anybody I've seen. I am sure you have learned the best way. If I had any money left I'd be shipping you an A12 if you did B bodys. Maybe I drink too much beer in the garage, but I have well over 100 hrs. and this is all I have.
Rick.

I had one guy comment to me...."how are you suppose to make money if you put them together so fast?" The way I look at it.... I love to restore cars, been doing it for over 25 years... It's still a hobby level business for me without a lot of overhead....Meaning I don't "have" to make a months-end quota to "pay the bills" I feel that restoration costs are getting way out of hand and way out of reach for the common guy.... There's only one aspect of the overall restoration costs that I can control, it's not the cost of parts , it's not the cost of metal work , it's not the cost of body and paint ......it's my actual labour costs.... I feel that if I can work at a pace that I'm comfortable with and I can charge a price that's more then fair I can help the customer save a little bit... The closet "big name" resto shop to me does all makes and models and their level of correctness leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to Mopars...Sure the quality of their in-house body and paint are second to none, but they don't turn out a car for under six figures....My labour rate is HALF of what theirs is... I'd be glad to help anybody finish-up their projects....I exspecially like cars that are already painted and just need re-assembly.... THANKS EVERYBODY for all the kind words
