I have a 572 hemi and want to measure oil temp in the most accurate spot. I do have a Mildon oil pan installed with a spot design for the temp sensor. However I see people install by the oil sending unit. At this time I don't have an engine cooler installed. I want to check my temp first to see if I need one. My block is billet with water cooling.
Any advice or help would be great. Just want to do it right.

Thanks Ken / texting works great also 715-432-5080

Do you have a remote mounted oil filter?
If so put the oil temp sender in the line going into the block from the oil filter so you know what oil temps are entering the motor twocents
I had a oil temp. sender mounted in the rear of a stock block, I think that the sender would get to the exact same temps as the rest of block after 20 to 30 minutes of driving and not read the oil temperature flowing past the sender shruggy work
My message is make sure the sender won't be influenced by some other heat source up

I put it in the side of the oil pan. I figure that is where the pump is drawing from, thus it's the most accurate indication of what is being fed to the bearings.

The oil pan is probably the best place but if you don't have a bung in the pan that works for you then it is a hassle to pull the pan and weld a bung in. The easiest place to install a sending unit in a running engine is to remove the oil bypass bolt and drill and tap it for 1/8 NPT. That should get you in the ballpark.

Wet sump? Oil pan.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Really, the most accurate place to put it is in the pressure side of the oil line. That is as close to what the motor will consume as you can get.

Thank-you everyone. Yes engine has the pick-up in the oil pan. If I need the cooler I will put sensor next to the line you suggested. I will for now put it in the oil pan. I will post pick of engine when I get done with all the hook ups.
