Hey gang...
I knew the day would eventually come when my local parts stores can't even come up with the proper alternator for my '68 Charger...... What I need is the vendor part number from say; NAPA, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly's, etc..

Anyone have a verified part number/vendor for a '68 Charger alternator? All they keep finding is the '70-up dual field alternator. I KEEP telling them anything prior to '70, 69-earlier, use a single field alternator....

Thanks...

The 2098850 (46 amp) with a 2095059 two groove pulley would be a safe bet. If you needed a higher amperage (60 amp) alternator or think that your car came with one, go with the 3000010 with a 2095059 two groove pulley.

This is from the 68 Factory Parts Book.

have yours rebuilt or use the 70+ style and ground one of the field wires.

Troy,
How's it going? Did the PS pump work out?
I just called the Advance auto we use at work and they show for your car in Beck a single pulley # 186-6299 and double pulley 186-6300 and in the cheap line single pulley # 7000 and double #7001. It shows the case grounded feild style , only one terminal, as found on the 68/9's in their spoters guide Hope this is of some help
John

Troy,

I think I still have the box for my spare alternator (single groove pulley) home. The parts store was a Car Quest brand store. Ill try and get that number for you.

I went through about the same thing trying to find the right alternator for my 68 GTX. NAPA, Advance, or O'Reilly don't even list one for a hemi, but they do for a 440. I ordered one from O'Reilly and it's the correct roundback style but still came with 2 field terminals. Think I'll just ground the extra field and use it. I thought about buying all the parts and building one but this one is "pretty" and only cost about $50.

Thanks Gregory... I'm going to get back to this for I saw in my '68 parts book no unique pulley for '68 hemi's. Actually, I don't recall any identification for 426... Maybe all came with the higher amperage A/C units? Is that what you mean by all information you have? I know in my '69 parts book there is a unique part number for 426's....

Actually, the DL7001 is the one I have already, double pulley.. Do you know what the amperage is for that?

Cheers,

Troy,

Sorry for the delay but since I moved into my house, I haven't been able to find anything charger related as nothing is together anymore. Well, not yet at least. Anyway, here is the manufacturer and part number that was on the label..... Performance Plus sold by Car Quest parts store (NJ) part label number 7015. It is a single groove pulley round back style. Correct for 1968-1969. This is also for a non-a/c alternator.

Hey Brian...
Would that be a 37 amp version or a higher one? Unfornately, the car quest site I know doesn't have "shopping" ability like the other ones..

Autozone is calling it a 46 Amp alternator..

As far as reference, someone here on MOparts had this question posted a couple of years ago and that was the response..double pulley alternator..for Hemi's.

I have the same Autozone alternator on my 68 Chrysler 300 and it works great..

I think the double groove pulley is an attempt by rebuilders to provide a multi-application replacement part. Several 68's I've seen have a single groove pulley. I also have an early date code single groove pulley '68 hemi alt.

Troy,

I honestly don't remember. I wanted a spare alternator as I had stripped the stud on the back of the one in my car and had to get one quick. My main concern was that it was the round back style and that it had a single pulley. Maybe somone can look up the part number for you and tell you what amperage it is. My car has no frills to it other than a tach and power steering and brakes so electrically, if it is a 37 amp, then that is fine, if not and it is the upgraded amperage, heck thats fine too.
