I am doing a disk brake conversion on my 70 Barracuda. I have everything but the rotor dust shields. Are they really necessary or just window dressing?

Why would you even post that?

They have a purpose, but you can do without them.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I believe they shielded the rotors from sloppy lube jobs.
I don't see what else they could prevent that couldn't get to the rotors from the wheel side.

If you're suspension is clean then you could get away with not using them.

Road debris is probably the main thing. A spinning wheel acts like a shield on the outside, but on the inside, that's what the shield is for. I'd keep them in place.

Lots of newer applications don't have shields.

I've done many, many, many, swaps without them, and never an issue.
On cars of my own, and for other people.
