If there isn't a good way to mount a line-lock button on my aftermarket Slap-Stik handle (AutoGrip), I'm considering one of the buttons that are on the end of a "Slinky" cord that stretches out and retracts on its own. How does that style work if mounted permanently during normal street driving? Does it get tangled up around the steering column? Or is this a no-hassle approach? The only comment about this style of button that I've seen is that you should zip-tie the end of the cord to the steering wheel to keep the connections to the button from being pulled off.

I have never used a steering wheel mounted line lock button, but I don't think it would be a good idea for street. The amount of turning with those cords on a street car might tend to stretch out the cord, or worse, get tangled up and limit your steering in the middle of a turn. I'm not familiar with your shifter handle design, but I've always zip tied a micro switch to the shaft. Some handles already have the button installed.
I think a trick street piece would be a late model steering column with a clockspring. Could be wired for line loc, trans brake, nitrous, whatever you want. No external wires.

What I did was mount the button on the wheel and
ran the cord straight forward to the dash where
I have a plug in for a RCA plug.. never tore
the wires off

On the street just make sure the button is recessed

What type of switch are you using? My Hurst line lock came with one that uses a small rubber strap that's supposed to slide over the handle shaft, but the shifter handle I have is too big for that to fit without tearing the strap. It doesn't look like the strap could be replaced by a zip tie, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Take a closer look at the button assembly. There used to be a slot on the button where the rubber strap went through. I slid a zip tie through it. You might want to grind a small notch on the backside of the shaft for the zip tie to stay positioned in.

This is for my trans brake.. the switch came
with it(Biondo switch).. for my line lock I
have the Hurst ball handle with the switch in
the ball.. I can hold the button while shifting
it to high gear in the burnout.. I changed what
I did and just used high gear for the burnout

I have always used a switch mounted on the shifter in a position that can be used when shifting into high gear. The line lock solinoid is low amp draw and does not require a huge switch

I had the line-loc on the left side of the wheel and the transbrake on the right with coil cords. Secure the cords so they don't pull on the switch connections, leave some slack so it can "wrap" on the column when turning. Works fine. Just have to watch you don't snag them with your feet getting in or out.

Make sure that if the turn stem is there it dont hang up.Dont ask my 65s did.Rocky

I have seen guys use the horn button to ground the line lock solenoid and have a toggle switch to switch the circuit from the horn from the line-loc

had one on mine and I got tired of it wrapping around the column. then it started stretching out from wrapping. finally put a connector on it so I could leave it unhooked until I went to the track.

I was going to to this but went with the button
on my T handle since I dont have a trans brake
on my street rod

I really want to stay with a shifter-mounted button. Pi$$ed now because I can't locate the button that came with the kit... hate paying twice for something when it can't be found when it's time to use it.

I made a bracket attached to dash, within easy reach but not to close the steering wheel. Always in the same position and stable, it was an forearm snap-pull back, takes the wrist- finger movement out of the equation, basicly one muscle. Right handed release, then to shifter, left hand on the wheel. Keep it simple.
Had the cord and it always tangled on something and would catch between the gap of wheel and column, big pain.

i know it's there because thst's where i put it. i just have to have it jump at me when i need it ! i started to write down where stuff is located, but i lost that note pad. go figure ! i know how you feel mr.P.

When I lose stuff, it usually shows up by the next weekend after the new replacement parts show up. Just order a new one and you will find it.

A quick update that Herb (RTSE4ME) sent me the button he offered above and it arrived yesterday.

It'll get zip-tied to the lower part of my AutoGrip handle, which should work out fine. Thanks, again!

I hated mine. Eventually put phone jacks at both ends. Then you could pull the cable from the steering wheel at the end of the pass. When not in use you cold remove the cable completely. My street car uses the cruise control set switch, works great.

My garage I used to be able to find everything.Then my sons started getting into stuff.Niw If it dosent get moved I can find it.But somehow it gets moved.Oh yeah buy what you cant find and sure you will find it a few days later.Rocky
