Thanks to folks here and RC Central I got my new project on its maiden voyage only to find no OD, lock up or speedometer. So is there a way to bench test the VSS from the transmission??

Bench testing is, as described, on a bench.

Testing on the transmission while it's still in the car isn't bench testing. However, I'd say you have to have some sort of rotating cogged wheel running close to the sensor. Output should be a square wave. This'd show up on a voltmeter as AC voltage. There shouldn't be any DC voltage.

You can buy a decent sensor for $30 if you look.
