Hey gang..

I was curious... has anyone gone down the road of converting the 11x3" drums to a '70/'71 disk brake setup (spindle, bracket and calipers) which I have up in the attic.... Any unknown pitfalls that someone has experienced?

Thanks in advance...

Should be a bolt on operation as long as you have all of the parts and they are in good condition. Do you have a front anti-sway bar? The later calipers will interfere with the earlier sway bar mount so you'll have to swap some parts around to get it all to work.

Yeap, the 500 has a front swaybar..

I converted my 71 drum RR over to the Hemi disc, drum power set up, they are the best feeling brakes I have ever had, and that includes new cars. But you have to get the correct engine bay lines, and pop valve.

Just did a 68 RT clone. Call the Ram Man for his booster and Master Cylinder. Make sure you get the combination valve for the drum disc hold off valve. The 70 brake line set up works fine but you need to plug a port and the pro valve. Make sure its tight and use tape.

The neat trick now is to use the sp[indle sleeve that Ram Man sells so you can use the 73 up Rotor. Otherwise the small bearing 70-72 2 pieve rotors are now costly and not as good as unicast.

The pedal feel is awesome!

Any issues if I configure the front brake line system like a factory disc brake car ( I can pattern it after my Daytona ), with the only exception in the caliper set-up, using the single piston 70/72 as opposed to the 4-piston Bendix set-up.... Getting values and lines is easy enough... Again, I have the spindles/brackets, calipers and rotors for the 70/72 set-up..

Cheers,
Troy

front hung calipers will hit the sway bar end links on a 1969 and older

your only options are either hang them to the rear
or change the front lower control arms to a 1970 style

I hung 79 Volare calipers on the rear of a 1968 , used brake hoses for a 73 camaro

Ditto what gtx6970 said on sway bar. Otherwise no issue, and they are front hung. By the way there are one piece 70-72 rotors with small bearing at a reasonable price. Even the calipers can be had as OEM rebuilt for under $25ea.

Thanks guys....

After reflection, I really don't want to start changing things out, swapping swaybars and such.. I did find out I have the totally wrong front drums on it.. C-Body applications I believe. I have a friend here locally that has a complete XHD 11x3 front drum assembly that is in great shape he took off his 69 GTX many many years ago I can have for free.... I'm going to go the easy route now and just put the proper stuff back on the car and just go cruising again...... grin
