I'm looking into getting some new mufflers for my 1971 roadrunner with a 440 big block. I'm looking for a deep, turning heads noise. I have been reading to stay away from Flowmasters. I was wondering what do you guys have and have any recommendations on what to put on mine.

I like the sound of Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers.

Lots of people like/love flowmasters. If you are looking to "turn heads" while you idle by, Flowmasters are your game.
If you want to turn heads while you are on-throttle then many will work.

I have run Dynomax and Magnaflows on 440's. Love the Magnaflows.

I have a complete Accurate Exhaust system on my 69 M-code GTS. The sound is very nice, but not as loud as most of the Flow Master mufflers. The Accurate system is made to look and sound like when these cars were original and new from the factory. So if you want to turn heads go Flow Master.

Flow Masters will make even the most docile of motor sound like a beast. At least they did for an old 318 of mine. Lots of bark, no bite.

If you want more power and better sound switch to a complete 3.0 system from the headers back up devil scope

Thank you for yall's input. I currently have flowmasters on the car right now, but it sounds like the inside of one is rattling. i took ti to the local muffler shop and he said he gets a lot of flowmasters that break on the inside.

I have a full exhaust system with Flow Master on my 69 Road Runner. I bit loud, but I like the sound. It does turn heads. And sets off car alarms in parking ramps. I don't seem to have the drone some complain about. I am using factory style hangers.

I love flowmasters but as stated above, the baffles inside rust out WAY sooner than the outside of the muffler. The baffles are very thin.
TTI systems ship with dynomax super turbos. I put them on my 73 340 and its too quiet for me.

Almost anything is going to change the way mufflers sound. Stock engine, vs modified, cubic inches, pipe diameter, crossover, muffler size, etc.
what may sound good on one car, may not sound good on another.
Numerous independent tests have shown, that flow masters, actually don’t flow very well.

My car. 526 stroker, 3 inch exhaust with dynomax ultraflows, no crossover.

I am running Dynomax and love them. Nice sound and the resonance doesn't run you out of the car when driving.

451, 3" from the headers back, X-pipe, Summit welded turbo mufflers, and glasspacks in the tailpipes. Sounds pretty manly at idle and during cam break-in. If I ever get out of paint jail and get the car reassembled, then I can report on the sound while on the road whistling

Those welded turbo mufflers I believe are the same as "flowtech afterburners". I had some on my Dart before switching to magnaflows, and they had a nice powerful unique sound. I wasn't wild about the internal design of the afterburners, but, I didn't notice any performance difference from the magnaflows.

I made a little video comparing the sound.

My next one is gonna be the tired & true dynomaxes with glasspacks rearward alongside the leaf springs. "cherry bomb" parts house glasspacks are cheap & do not neck down where the end nipples are welded to the main case & the louvers are punched outward (both good for flow) but they do get louder over time like most of em probably do. To me the best would be a restrictive (quiet) system all the way back with electric or vacuum cutouts right at the connector. (keeps neighbors/cops happy) & the noise (& power) is there only when needed/appropriate). Control is always a good thing.

If you want to be able to hear someone talking to you or listen to the radio stay away from flowmaster.

I had a Flowmaster 40 and absolutely loved it. In the search for more power and better fuel mileage, I went to this style:
