Do the collector the way Headers by Ed suggests. Its like a poor man's merge and would seem to make a more leak free joint. Mine were made by Ed back when he still was making headers.
Picture added. Heat and pinch the tubes so they form a cross. Weld and then slip on the collector. Weld the outside.

I pm'ed 408strokerdart but have not heard back from him yet. My engine is moved back in my car so there is no store bought headers to be found. Anyone fabbed their own? I am thinking 16 gauge. Bring the center point out further than the outside of the tubes. Angle cut the tubes towards the center. A lot of header fab shops sell a center point or star to weld to the intersection of the tubes.
