Has anyone out there ever painted their door panels? I was at paint shop the other day they told me I could clean panels (plastic) spray an adherer, and then primer with plastic primer and paint with their matching color interior paint chart,(paint for plastic panels about 46 bucks a pint. Does this work? and does it last? Thanks

Its should work. Clean the panels real good to remove any old silicone. I would also use an adhesion promoter on them like Bull Dog. Then prime and paint.

If you do use paint, be sure to add the stuff they put in paint for flexible surfaces like bumpers. The panels are made of polypropylene and does not take paint well. Since it is plastic, there will be a certain amount of flex in it that will cause enamel and lacquer paints to flake unless a flexable additive is put in. It is even worse if you do the arm rests.
Having said all this, after buying paint to do my panels, I went to SEM dye instead. Prepped by a gentle media blast of all oxidized areas. Wash, rinse, repeat. Clean with wax and grease remover applied with a scuff pad. Wash, rinse, repeat, handling with gloved hands to keep your body oils off of the panels. Two coats, one light, one heavy of SEM adhesion promoter. Then three or four coats of the SEM dye.
Good luck

Thanks. One other thing, I have found that panels that are seasoned longer (not installed immediately) seem to hold up better in service. The panels in the picture will not be installed until the end of the summer. I have installed all the plastic dash pieces that were dyed at the same time but the dash itself won't be installed until then anyway.

I cleaned mine THOROUGHLY and used the adhesion promotor.

I was going from teal to red on my '63 330 door panels and they turned out really nice.

I tried scraping some off on a test panel that I had (extra drivers door panel) with a fingernail and I couldn't get it off!

I can't recall the brand of dye/paint but it was at Autozone.
