There is a 3 digit stamp on the upper right by the hole on my data plate.
(5 ? W) not sure on middle one. What do they represent or mean.
Thanks

It was inspected by inspector 5W or inspectors 5 & W, whoever that was / they were.

Would that inspection be routine, or for a problem that was repaired? I've wondered the same as far as the paint dabs, since they differ on different cars; but some have so many that maybe that was a routine thing. Obviously there were ID dabs for pulling some parts, but the off-line repairs would need some sort of visual OK, I would think...

Fender tag inspection marks were stamped pre-paint, so they themselves would not reflect any inspections after that process.

There were also 'inspection tags' on some cars, at some plants that were subject to other, later inspection marks / alteration though.

I am guessing this is a 69 or 70 St Louis built car ? Typical 3 oval indentations in upper right corner in a horizontal row partially obscured by the RH tag screw ? Other examples are typically letters / numbers punched all the way through the metal , usually kicked over at a 30 % -45 % angle .Who knows exactly what they mean , but they are indeed inspection stamps of some kind .

I have always wondered just how this stamping of a hole in a fender tag was done. In all the Automotive plants I have worked the inspection stamp has always been an ink stamp usually put on a broadcast sheet or inspection sheet made of paper. What exactly was inspected if this is some kind of inspection stamp, the fit coming out of the body shop or something else and what machine was there to punch a hole in a sheet of metal that would have access for letters and numbers to be changed.
