Sorry - forgot you are working on a 42 . They don't use the lug. The adjustment screw rides against the band where the missing piece is, it pilots between the two vertical fingers.

got to pull the trans to swap that one, I did a stock band replace in a 46re one time but there is no way no how the stock band is going out or in with the trans assembled and I have searched many times for a slip in band and never found one for the smaller 904 based trannys

On the 904/998/999/42/44 series units the failure usually comes from a band adjustment that gets out of whack and you start loading one of the vertical fingers instead Of the center lug of the band. Then all the load goes in to the finger which is designed to be a guide and not a load carrying member. If you look at this failed band you will notice the one vertical finger is bent and weld is broken and a piece of the band is missing.

I called that place that has the 727 / 46RE front slip-in band listed. He says he sells a good number of those but he does not know of a 904 42RE slip-in band being made.

Looks like I have to pull the trans unless someone has an idea for sneaking a band in while the trans is installed. Or a source for a slip-in 904/ 42RE front band?

You can try and see if you can snake your old parts out - backwards - remove the one with the damaged end first - then see if you can push the other around and out - that will tell you if the spot welded end will fit between the case and the front clutch drum. If it does then you should be able to install the new band. Whichever end is shorter on the new band is the end you want to install first.

I think the small boxes are a little tighter inside.

Good luck.

I've tried before and I'm pretty persistent. Couldn't do it.

Was not able to get the kickdown band out with the trans in the car.

Pulled the trans out and planning to install a new band. Then put the trans back in the jeep without doing a overhaul. Hopefully not a big mistake but the jeep needs to get back together asap.

Should I change the front pump seal or since it was not leaking it should be okay?

I'd leave well enough alone if the converter was dry.
New pump to case gasket and that's it.

Unless you see more issues when you get it apart. Keep track of the thrust washers and be careful putting the pump back in so you don't damage the reaction shaft to front clutch seal rings.

It helps most people to stand the trans up to install the pump - that's how the plant did it too.
