My friend "The Palm Reader" who is ready to debut a beautiful 68' Coronet Wanna-Bee this Spring wants to run a tach mounted onto the steering column just as it may have been as a day two modification back in the day.

Anyone here remembers or knows for sure what dudes used to mount the tach there?

Did they even have worm gear straps back then?

Were there such a thing as a worm gear style radiator hose clamp back in 68'?

or did they have a different design?

Pictures?

He just wants to be period correct and also driving me crazy period! LOL.

That's what we used. Don't forget the prism tape on the dash, the Kraco 8 track, woodpecker header mufflers, the rear end housing painted white and air shocks pumped up to 150# so the M50s don't rub.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

LOL.
Nah, his car will be very spartan to say the least. Kind of a [censored] child of a F.A.S.T type car for the street. Warmed over Elephant built by Dave Dudek.

Thin strip of rubber/vinyl/electrical tape where the clamp could rub the column's paint, and a hose clamp. Probably where I learned to trim clamp ends of excess length. Some guys screwed them to the column as long as the screw threads didn't interfere with the column's guts.

I have the tach mounted on the column of my current Cuda the same way that I had it mounted on my first car back in the early 70s. Radiator clamp.

Back then I used black electrical tape under it to keep from scratching the column's paint. Today, I slip the clamp into some heat shrink.

McCreary M50's hanging out of the wheel well , with shackles so long that they had to remove the rear valence on my Challenger R/T when I first bought it. wave

hose clamp on my 69 charger forever. if a guy couldn't find one big enough, two of 'em were screwed together to make one big enough to go around the column and mount, which, at the time, most had a slot the clamp fit in perfectly. i hung out with some guys at the international harvester truck garage-remember those "corn-binder" big trucks? i got some super big clamps there and cut them to the exact length i needed. as they were stainless, there was no need to worry about them rusting, although several guys painted them to match the column color, making the tach appear to just "be there".

Two self taping short screws, and a hose clamp...been doing that way for many years. If you don’t use the short screws, it will slide and move around.

What kind of tach is he using Lee? Hopefully a Sun or SW!

This is as old-school as it gets. Obviously the column mount one has the curved bottom... yes, I said curved bottom.

SK has large T-bolt clamps if he wants something other than a hose clamp.

Wow! what a cool tach.

RMCHGR, Yes, he's running an retro SW unit with the bottom curved for the column. We just weren't sure what was used back when to mount them.

You know how some movies will have graffiti in the back ground for a New York scene set in the early 70's and the graffiti will be of the 80's and 90's. I catch the spoils every time.

I myself wish Super/Stock Formula 1 front runner tires were reproduced. I'd be first on line for them.

wrap a thin piece of rubber under the hose clamp and don't forget traction bars!

Put heat shrink tubing on the clamp. It keeps it from marking your column.

my one buddy's dad was one of the first formula one dealers when they came out. F-60's on a 6" rim front and M-50's with a 10" rear rim on the back of my charger with a slightly larger sway bar on the front [can't remember what it was originally from, but it needed modified to fit], and a home made cross tube attached to slapper bars on the rear made my charger a real turn carver on the street, and formula front runners on 4" cragar ss rims for NU-BE dragstrip duty along with mccreary 29x11.00 slicks on 7" stocker rims. long time ago though........
