Folks,
Desperately need some advice on removing the thermostat on my Intrepid.

I pulled the rad. shroud and the alternator. Now that I got to the thermostat cover I was able to get the bolts off but I am having trouble getting the cover out of the way to access the thermostat. There is a hard line that attaches to the cover so I cannot move it out of the way.

Any advice to get this out of the way so I can replace it would be great.

Thanks,

Craig

The hard line has to be disconnected.I believe there might be a bolt holding it down.Just hope the water pump isnt leakin. It does and looks like the stat is leaking.Pump is a major job.One of Chryslers netter ideas.Rocky

If you do need to replace the water pump then you'll also want to replace the timing belt, belt tensioner and pulley, while you are in there

I don't own a 2.7, but I think they use a timing chain.

It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

Why are you replacing the t/stat they seldom go bad? The waterpump has a weep hole next to the thermostat housing, are you leaking from that area?

The temp is going crazy on this car. I have lost heat inside the vehicle it works for a moment and then stops. It overheated on Saturday assumed it must the the thermostat.

Any ideas what else it could be?

Just replaced one on a 3.5, was getting real hot in slow driving situations. The fans were fine and if you cranked the rpm's up pretty high for just a second, the temp would fall right down. It's been a couple of weeks and is still fine. It is a strange looking thermo as it has a rubber substance on the valve of the thermo.

you need to jack up the front get the car level. take a clear tube from the bleeder and put it into the tank fill the tank FULL and run engine at 2000 till all air is done comming through hose. we have a tool at the dealer that looks like a funnel that fits on the tank to get the coolant even higher level than the rest of the engine it works great to bleed those. they can be a headache without it.

it maby just air but i have done stats on those for the same issue. usually just air if temp in vehicle comes and goes. most of the ones i have done stats on have temp gauge running 3/4 gauge instead of half and sometimes flucuating. sounds funny but that's what i have been seeing.

so what do you need to do to fix that problem?

I took the car to the dealer and they recommended I have the coolant outlet pipe replaced.. any ideas?

Thanks,

Craig

i would replace the stat if it has a bunch of mile say over 60000 and bleed the system completly. warning that stat is not very easy!!

i don't have one to look at right now but i have never taken the alt off just the stat housing. i know that it is tight especially doing it on the ground. i think that the trans cooler lines might be in the road though unclip them and move them back.

I don't own a 2.7, but I think they use a timing chain.

water pumps suck on these also chain is not very fun to deal with

you can see where the upper hose goes into the motor some dried anti-freeze. So I am assuming a leak here. I thought about going to the scrap yard and picking a replacement piece and seeing if that solves the leak issue.

I did replace the stat... what a nightmare. Had to remove the upper cover so I could remove the fan, all radiator hoses, oil dip stick and then I could remove the thermostat cover with 2ft. of extensions. Hard to put in and get out...

Today is seems to be running ok.. just want to make sure I did everything right so we don't have any other issues with this car.

The crazy car overheated again today!

I will try to bleed the system like was recommended and let you know what happens.
