I have a cowl on my 71 only because a 6 pack scoop looks terrible on a 3rd gen Charger because it has to sit so far back on the hood. At first I hated it, but now that it has been on the car awhile it has grown on me.

FWIW...when my car ran mid 10s, the cowl hood ran just as good as the 6 pack hood. What makes it better...the cowl hood wasn't sealed to the carb, but the 6 pack hood was. The seal I had on the 6 pack hood worked too...was a tenth quicker and 1 mph faster sealed up.

Ideally I prefer no scoop but even with this 3.5" cowl, it was the only way to make the "hardware" fit properly. The key to a cowl hoods aesthetics I believe is to make it "flow" with the car with a tapered look, not have it come rearwards from the front with a sudden "Jimmy Durante'd" hike in its rearward height. This is especially important on a shorter wheelbase car where a taller cowl scoop take away from the lines of the car and make it look "stumpier" when viewed from the side. Mine will be sealed in due course. ![](https://s1.postimg.org/3gan2r9man/valiant-vh-charger-1-nw_2.jpg) ![](https://s1.postimg.org/3e62ppvn5b/valiant-vh-charger-side-nw_2.jpg)

I have ordered a 6",still not sure but as it sits I have this fibre glass hood sitting here unusable so I will sit it on there and stand back for a look. Will it stand out more than with carbs and air cleaners ?? Will it be more of a cop bait ?

I had been thinking about a cowl hood on my 1970 GTX for some time. I heard all about using a Chevy hood on my Mopar from some of my friends. I found a fiberglass hood nearby on Craigslist and bought an 8 inch tall Harwood cowl scoop. I joined the two and took it to a test and tune. That particular night we had a pretty good head wind. In my engineering mind I thought the cowl hood would help the air up and over the GTX and out toward the sides as it gets wider toward the back. I did back to back runs with my forward facing scoop hood and the cowl hood. The result was a BIG disappointment as the GTX slowed down a 10th! I would be open to ideas to make it work and if not find someone who would be interested in the cowl scoop. MJ

The rear of the cowl scoop needs to be real close to the windshield for it to work and actually pull air in. I can't slide my hand b/t the scoop and windshield...palm on the glass.
