I've never built a 318 in my life, so no can't help you with a typical 318 bobweight. Lighter than a stock 340.... that's about all I could say for sure 318 rods are also much lighter than 340/360 rods... 273 would be even better I have couple of those laying around if anyone wants them.

Thanks for that link! that's a nice strong basic reliable combo!

318s get no respect but with the advent of strokers and due to the fact that there's probably 100 times more 318 blocks out here than allthe 340's and 360's combined it just makes sense to give them some love!

I'm just looking for a basic 400horse motor to push ~2900 pounds into the low 11's, I like the idea of a near stock sized forged crank cause I do want to do at least one more 340. The 3.55 would actually give me about 1/2 point of much needed compression for the combo I'm working on....

if I can get the parts I want together and all the stars fall in line this will be an interesting little rev-happy motor!

A TRW L2406F will work with the 3.51" crank. It is forged but it requires a press fit rod and has no valve reliefs. I am pretty sure the skirts will clear the crank.


This is a LC371P. It is cast and the two square edges on the skirt are what contact the crank counterweights.

with the Federal Mogul pistons I used I had to do some grinding on the skirt to clear the crank.

Have my 349 installed and hope to make it out this year. Got it up and running at the end of last season but after it warms and the track opens I will post some numbers. It does sound good

Well it looks like I'm getting the 3.55" from Darrel, (thanks for the pass...Brian!!) getting a set of the MP 6" Aluminum rods from a guy right here in NC and I figure I'll get a set of the 507 gram KB167 9.5:1 flat tops with 1.81" CH....that all adds up to 9.585" and about 10.5:1 with 63cc E heads and 341" of super light bobweight.

I fugure the Hydraulic roller is gonna limit the motor to around 6500rpm but the rods ought to go plenty of laps (especially 1/8th mile) with that very limited crank speed.

It'll be a low buck but very unique small block combination that ought to run pretty well.

I've considered a similar setup but using some of the Howard Racing 6" powderforged rods and a turned down 360 crank. I presume the 6" rods you're using are SBC size? what are you going to do about the pin size difference? bore the little end out and rebush? once I priced out all that mickey-mousing to get "off the shelf" parts to work (reworking the rods to fit a mopar pin, turning the crank down, etc) it is less expensive to just look for a roller cam 360 block (or magnum) and use the stock rods, crank, and KB107's, or go for a 4" crank and the KB forged pistons for a 318/390....

Just bought the rods (thanks Moparts) and the pistons (KB167's) today, ready for the crank when Darrel PM's me....

flo....looking forward to the results.

BBranger...thanks for the piston ifo...The KB167's have the valve reliefs (which I'll need with .520/.540 lift) and will be near zero deck (10.5:1)and the price is good too!!

When I did the math and saw how the 6" alums and the kb167s will work with that 3.55 stroke and ~340" it looks like a slam-dunk bracket motor.

Here's a pic of the KB167 318 slugs.

If you notice with the 1.81" compression height it appears that there is just not that much skirt below the pin...possibly to the point where the crank CW might not need a whole lot inthe way of clearancing....time will tell after I mock it up but compared to the other 2 piston pics above it looks to me like there might possibly be enough room for adequate clearance even with a .123" shorter C to C rod.

Brian this is what I wanted to check, if I can save not having to whittle down the counterweight radius....that'll be a good thing.

Yeah I'll be curious to see how well the combo works, I'm suprised the 318 isn't more commonly hot rodded given it's overwhelming numbers of them out there.

The 3.91" bore sounds small by comparison but I suppose not many people realize the bore of the Chevy LS1 5.7 is right at 3.9" too!!

318s have better bore to stroke ratios than 350s and SBC400s 426 hemis and 440s, also have better rod/stroke ratios.

Well my 340 +1 is gonna be 3.91 x 3.55, an LS1 is 3.9 x 3.62 and they seem to run pretty strong...plenty of 10 second stock shotblock LS motors out there
