I'm sure this topic has been beat to death, but...
I purchased this 426 a while back, and like the previous owner, I don't want to blow it up. do I opt out for the 440, and if she blow's, no biggy, there's more, or do I freshen this 426 and keep my fingers crossed? the 426 is era correct for my car, where the 440 is not. I may sell the car when I'm done, and the 426 may make it more appealing? any thoughts? anybody face the same dilemna?

Why are you concerned about the engine blowing up? Are you going to race it, or make it a nice street car? A properly assembled engine should take a good bit of abuse without worry.

it'll be street/strip. I suppose it's just a motor.

go with a 440. save the 426.

If you put 426 badges on the motor, most won't know the difference.

I would use the 440 Hemi with the Winchester grip shifter....

a 440 will run stronger with a stock rebuild over a stock rebuilt 426 wedge. but i'm into period correct stuff so i would use the 426 wedge.

Use the 440 block with a 500" stroker kit and have some real fun. 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury

the 440 is cheaper to build if your looking for performance.

Build the car how you want, but if someone genuinely cares about the 426 they will want it in the car not on the floor.

Other than the price of pistons, could someone explain to me why a 440 would be "cheaper to build" than a 26 wedge?

The picture I posted above is the 500" motor in my Plymouth that is full Show Car. It has won Best of Show and First Place everywhere for the past two years. Chrysler used it in their display during the Woodward Dream Cruise here in Michigan. It's fun to drive with all that torque and passes everything except a gas station. It does run on pump gas with 650 HP. The crank and rods are Eagle with Diamond pistons.

Here is what I did. I built this mild 440 for my 63 but I love the Max Wedge cars so I put the 426 Super Stock decals on the valve covers like the Ply Max Wedge cars had. It is easier to just tell most people it is a 426 rather then say its a 440 with 426 decals ! Technically it is a 426 bored .100 which is the same bore as my .030 over 440. Ron

That's funny!!!! But that'll only work until some guy (like me) comes along and looks down at that funny little pad by the distributor!!

The 6 bolt valve covers probably don't help any either....

440 or 426, that's a sweet car Ron.

I thought that pad was for putting a soda pop or beer can on?

I guess im dumb, young and ignorant but i cant see 14 cubic inches making a big power difference when your dealing with 400+ cubes. However if 14 cubes does make that big a difference you could go with 14 cubic inches over a 440 to gain even more power. Whatever size engine that equals to...
