Was a good day on the pump. After much anticipation using these MW victor heads, I have to say I am very pleased with them and the performance of this engine. We used Glenn's roller cam over, 13:1, mildly ported super victor intake, OOTB 1050 carb, 1.7 TD rockers, 2" old Hooker headers, Milodon pan, no special equipment just good parts. I will post a bunch of pics, here's the link to the build post I did. Lots of pics in this post, flow #'s and more info. https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0&fpart=1Oh, and it made 768HP @6500rpm and 683TQ @5000rpm!! It sounds nice and mean too!!!! I almost forgot, it made 776HP with a tapered 1" wilson spacer on it.... Brian

Hello, Glenn's gonna love that in his car. How in the heck is he gonna hook that up on the street? Great job Brian! Damon

Real nice numbers. Your build is a great example of a well put together combo. Intake/cam heads/RR, port work, CI and compression. Brian, you Glenn and your Dad, did a Really nice job putting together this combo. All that power with a 264* @ .050 roller too, witch some would consider small. Turns out its Plenty with the right mix of things. Great Motor build, mike

Nice!!!what does it like to idle at? did the carb need much work? like air bleeds?
what jets and does it have a power valve?
will he need a different converter now?
Didn't have to do a lot to the carb. It is a new 8896-1. Jetted 88 square out of the box. Didn't touch the air bleeds.
Initial pulls were with 34 degrees timing.
Pull to 6000 netted 728hp at 6000, 675 tq at 4900 & 5000.
Went down to 32 on the timing pulled to 6500, 738 at 6000 and 754 hp at 6500, torque peak stayed at 4900 and went to 681.
Plugged the rear power valve and jetted it 86/94. 760 @ 6400, 682 @ 4900 (and 5000).
Went up to 96 (now 86/96) in the rear. 768 @ 6500, 683 @ 5000.
That will be my baseline setting.
Converter is a 8" PTC that flashed to 5200 behind the old combo (550ish hp), so it should work pretty good with this one as well.

Nice numbers for a street ride
13.0 to 1 on the street? Better toss in a drum of race fuel in the trunk, or switch over to E-85. Still a very nice (heavy) car, still it should hit the 9's easy.
Well, pretty much gravitating away from street car status with this one. Although it may see time at the local cruises. May still cork it up and take it up to the Cannery on Friday night at MATS.

Nice Numbers, your getting me encuraged to finish the engine. Not much to do on mine, just pull the heads back off, dissasemble, grind more pushrod clearance, reassemble with different retainer locks and bolt the top end back together. Would have been done, but been at the Hospital almost every weekend for the last month. Started with the delivery of my third grandchild, then I had the flu, then my daughter broke her foot, and then my wife had a bleeding ulcer.....
Anyhow, what spring pressures are you running on that engine?

Here's the brains behing the project. I have to say a big thank you to Brian and his dad. Brian spent a lot of time on the phone with me fielding my questions, concerns, and "idea's". At least re-using my cam with 1.7 rockers looks like it was a good one.
I'm very pleased with the results. Thanks Brian and Fred.
THANK YOU Glenn...although pics of me are taboo LOL! I would use these heads again in a heartbeat over Indy's stuff. This build is really impressive when you consider the 2" shelf header, OOTB carb, mild intake work and mild camshaft.
Oh, and we used .013 lash on the cam. It liked 32° total best. The spacer netted us an avg. of 6hp and 6tq across the entire rpm range we tested from 4000-6500! But Glenn's not using it, as hood clearance is an issue. 800HP is very do-able with these heads and "regular" porting. There is more in the ports but seeing as this was to be a lower rpm engine than I normally do, I felt the porting would work best in the rpm range Glenn would run.
Now if edelbrock will clearance the heads better...
So any idea's what you guys think the car should run?? Trans brake, 2 step, 4.30 gear with 30" tire, 4-link, and about 3600lbs.... I think wide open it would go 9.60's in 1500d.a. Maybe 9.70's....????????

Very nice!!!! did you end up having any problems with valve cover fit? Thanks
I had to clearance the valve cover's rail around the rockers. But it didn't take too long to do. I really like "clearance" in an engine, so I'm anal about things being too close. Brian

the Moroso slide rule shows 9.56 @ 140.2 for 775hp and 3650lbs.
to put it in persepctive, my buddies 3850lb 68 Charger made around 750hp on our dyno. car has run 9.71 @ 139.5.
Moroso slide rule shows 778hp for the 9.71 ET, and 802hp for the 139.5 speed.
if the HP numbers are real, and the car is fairly well sorted out, and you're not running in crap air, the Moroso slide rule is generally pretty close.

Those are good numbers. If the Victor heads are as tall as Indy heads, you are going to run into a hood clearance issue with that spacer on top of that intake. I know my vent tubes are burried into my scoop with SR heads, a 440-2 intake, 1 inch adapter and Dominator. Good luck with it. How much does your car weigh?
I did some measuring, with the raised port heads, which add an inch of height, plus the taller super victor manifold, the carb flange is 7 1/2" from the valley tray. The victor 440 on the rpm heads (prior combo) was 6 1/8" tall.
I tried a dominator on a 2" adapter before, so that put that setup at 8 1/8" overall height and the carb was about even with the hoodline. The wilson spacer is actually 1.5" tall, so it would put the carb about an inch higher (9" total height).
With a weight loss regimen, both for me and the car, total weight should be around 3600. Maybe 3575 by summer.

G-bob, your running a motor plate so why dont you simply look into lowering the engine alittle vs. where you had it located. I would mach it all up with the headers in place and see if your gonna have clearance issues with the tubes prior to making the lowering move. You may even be able to space the k-member down some if you have some steering linkage clearance issues. I would figure out some way of running the spacer by dropping the engine. It shouldnt screw with your front driveshaft angle all that bad. I also nticed that you guys ran the engine using a mechanical water pump driven off the crank. Well, you got yourself some more ponies right there by running an electric pump. Its gonna be fun to see this car run now. You definitely have the chassis for it. Have you thought of putting some radial slicks on that HotRod? Good job to IMM!!!
Oh yeah, When the Victors first came out, my friend built a Victor headed BigBlock for I believe CarCraft and it made similar numbers. I posted the data and everyone brushed it off like it wasnt possible with such a simple/mild combo using those heads. Well, you guys proved it again.

Thats the article. Thats my buddy Robert Hendricks in the article that built the engine. I forgot the engine was that small and used the standard victors. After the build, Robert played with it some more with a different manifold and carb and I believe cam and made over 750. Anyways, that is the article. I mentioned the power that Robert made prior to that article coming out and everyone thought I was smoking something. Oh well, very good cylinder heads. I almost used those for an engine for Bob Mazz. but we gave up due to a lack of spring height so we ended up with B1 heads. The only issue I have with the Victors appears to be in the springs height limitation. I cant remember if there is a spring diameter problem though. However I am talking about VERY aggresive cam profiles as such would be used for SuperStock style engines. It would have been nice if Edelbrock would have made them for taller 2.1ish spring installed height and 1.625 diam springs. The diameter may be fine, but the spring height is a no-go. If the spring issue wasnt an issue, I would think the "All-Out" Victor N/A build at 825hp Might be possible. Still a possibility, we didnt play with them long enough to see if we could remedy this apparent concern. .800 plus lift I think would require 2.1ish installed height if Im not mistaken. At least with Isky springs.

I cant remember what the spring installed height was that we were getting with the retainers that we had mach'd up but im guessing that .750 would be about max lift at the retainer after lash and pushrod deflection. That would be using a 2.02 installed height spring. Im just checking the Isky tool room springs catalog however. I just cant remember what installed height I was getting when I was initially setting up Bobs Victors were. If we could get 2.0-2.02 installed height then I would guess a cam with .780 lift would be pushing it and .750 after lash and deflection. I am also not sure as to how the valve geometry would be affected by installing longer valves than what Edelbrock lists. That would give better spring installed heights but the geometry would have to be checked.

I installed my springs at 2.00", but it took using increased height retainers (+0.100"), locks (+0.050"), and cutting the spring pockets about 0.040". This was with loosing 0.060" install height to the lower spring locators/cups. The springs I used are PAC 1325 valve springs. These are 1.55" diameter, 150 lbs @ 2.00", 765 lbs @ 1.20", good for 0.800" lift.
The Edelbrock head valve seats are cut to handle larger diameter springs, but I am not sure about rocker arm clearance with 1.625" springs?
Here you can see how close the springs are to the rockers on the shaft.

Brian measured, and my 1.7 T&D's would have cleared 1.625 springs. If I had gone with a bigger cam, we probably would have gone with the 1.625's, but since it is "smallish", we used 1.55's.

Valley pan is the edelbrock piece they make to go wtih these heads. It bolts to the front and rear pan rails AND to the heads. Very nice setup.

Wedgie, Nice of you to dig this thread up. G-bob's had this thing on the track for a while now, and it'd be nice to compare the track notes to the dyno notes.

Well, I just ran my quickest time at PAO last saturday in 100 degree heat. Victor max wedge heads, solid roller, 1.7 t&d rockers, super victor intake, 13:1. 3530 lbs. Launched off the brake at 4800, shifted at 67-6800, crossed stripe at 7000-7100. 9.96 @ 135.17.
Don't know the incrementals because they didn't give out timeslips on the "arm drop" pass, but it seemed to hook pretty good.

As for Gbob's car...I think anyone who's been around drag racing enough should see that his 60ft (1.44 avg.) is leaving alot to be desired as far as E.T. is conscerned. But he's like me, gets to the track once in a while and doesn't like to work all day on the car so it takes time to sort a chassis out. Especially when it was a street car for so long. And he still has not touched the timing (probably too low) or jetting (probably too rich).
All true, and that 1.440 is my best 60 ever. Average is more like 1.455 at fontana. I don't have a weather station, so I pull the track weather conditions after the fact from that internet site to put in my log book. I'm still trying to find the best tire pressure, shift points, etc. And timing (32 degrees) and jetting is the same as when it was dynoed in March in Indio (basically sea level).
I've had the car out a grand total of 5 times since putting the motor in.
After the first time out with it at Vegas, I had the converter tightened up (although the flash was loosened) as slippage calculators showed it to be in the 13-14% range. Also went to a 32" tall radial slick, a 4.56 gear, and put the spool in it.
Since then, I got three runs at 1/8th mile Barona, seven at a street legal day at fontana, 5 at a summit series race at fontana and then 4 at PAO at famoso this past weekend.
I think the converter needs more tightening and the flash needs to be dropped 3-400 rpm (currently at 58-5900). There is no shift recovery on the 2-3 shift, tach stayed at 6700 on the time I checked it. (Still have to remember to check shift recovery on the 1-2 shift, sure wish I had a playback tach). Slippage now is calc'ing out around 9%.
I know I have a lot of chassis tuning to do. First step is to get rid of the prostreet regular steel (with urethane ends) four-link bars. I'm in the process of getting the parts to have some 4130 bars with FK solid ends made. I also need to re-plot to see where the IC is now with the taller tires.
As a point of reference, my first run at PAO was a 9.995 @ 135.68. 60 ft was a 1.489. Website said the DA at that time was 3,296, temp was 95, humidity was 22%.
