Got a flywheel with a car my son bought. Have 2 choices of motors I may use. How do I identify if the flywheel is a internal or external flywheel? Was down this road 40 years ago and had to tear everything apart and get it balanced, don't want to do that again. Looked for a part number on it but couldn't find one. Any help? one motor is a 77 318 , the other is a 72 340.probaly going to use the 318 for now cause the 340 needs a rebuild and he's on a budget.

A pic of the crankshaft side of the flywheel would help.

When you click on 'Reply' and the reply dialog box comes up, click on the 'File Manager' link just below the message box. The dialog box for adding photos will open. Then click 'Browse' and find the photo on your PC. Click on your your photo. The name of your photo will appear between the 'Browse' and 'Add File' buttons. Click on 'Add File' and your photo name will be at the top of the dialog box. If this is the only photo, click on "Done Adding Files". Your photo is now an attachment. Hope this helps.

Bigblocks and smallblocks use the same six bolt flywheels, so there are more possibilities to ponder.
ANY 318 is internally balanced as is any 5.2Mag, 350B, 361, 383RB, forged crank 383B, 413, and many 440s.

Most flywheels of a specific size had the same casting number, the one that's on the flywheel. Nothing to be told from that.

The factory unbalanced the flywheels the same way they showed us in the DC or MP engine books. There should be a diagram here somewhere. All this was done on the engine side of the flywheel. That's why the picture is needed.

R.

when you find the (MP) picture you will need to find someone who knows trigonometry to do the math to pinpoint the exact location of where to drill the holes to unbalance it.
