I'd like to install a high flow muffler but leave the stock resonator in place. I'm thinking of the Dynomax Super Turbo for a little better sound, and maybe a bit more power. However, I've read on a few places that lowering exhaust back pressure can hurt performance on these engines. I don't know if this is true or not. Never heard of such a thing. That's why I came here. I trust you guys.

PS, this is a 2010 Challenger SE 3.5 engine, single exhaust.

I thought the same thing too until a coworker installed a Mopar performance exhaust (was for a 5.7, had an exhaust shop install it) on his 09 3.5 charger. It popped like crazy and the car ran very poorly, had it changed back 2 days later. Maybe just a muffler wouldn't do that?

You can change the muffler if you want to change the sound. You won't get any power gain from it though. In general, you want low back pressure but high gas velocity. Increasing pipe size reduces velocity. Reduced velocity equals reduced exhaust gas scavenging. Since you're not changing pipe size you will be fine. In every build the designer is trying to size his pipes large enough to not restrict top end power, yet small enough to not have gas velocity fall out the bottom.

Thanks for the reply, Daytona Turbo. So you're saying changing to a high flow muffler won't hurt low end performance? And leaving on the stock resonator won't make it too quiet with a Dynomax Super Turbo?

Yes, it's the pipe size you have to be concerned about, which you are not changing, so your power will not be affected. I would see if there's any youtube videos of guys who have put on the muffler you are interested in so maybe you can get an idea of how it would sound with or without the resonator, otherwise it's trial and error.

Super Turbo is a good choice.

i bought my 2010 Challenger 3.5L SE new off the lot seven years ago. First thing I did to it was get rid of the single exhaust and swap on a dual set of pipes from a 2009 Challenger SRT. I found the set on Craigslist pretty cheap. Seems a lot of the V8 guys get rid of them to get bigger (and louder) pipes. Lot's of duals around. I immediately noticed the bottom end on the 3.5 got a little soggy. Motor spins up like crazy though. I think it sounds great too. Since I commute nearly 150 miles a day, the slightly soggy bottom end doesn't bother me much. At 80mph, the tach needle hangs at around 2200 rpm. It's only when I'm trying to maintain at low speeds below 1100 rpm that I feel the soggy part. Car now has 263K on the clock. I'll run her until she makes 300k and get another one. Maybe next year.

Thanks guys for the comments. That gives me some good understanding of what to do. I'm going to try the Super Turbo. If nothing else it will let the engine breath better.
