Did the 70 Superbirds have Aluminum or cast iron 6 pack intakes? I know they were early built cars and did Chrysler use up the Edelbrock 6 packs and then use the cast iron later in the production year?

They could have had either one, I think confused
It has been said on here that Mopar ran out of the cast iron intakes and switch back to the Eddy aluminum ones around the beginning of December 1969 shruggy
Maybe another internet myth work
I had a 1970 V code Charger that the scheduled production date was 10-23-69, it was sold new in the town I lived in in SO CA(Victorville) and it had a cast iron intake on it, I ended up buying the car years later and it was missing the original carbs and intake and Dana 60 by then. I found three other intake and carbs with casting dates in early October of 1969 real easy so one of them ended up on that motor shruggy

Every Super Bird that was a V Code car I have seen has had a Cast Iron Intake Manifold. All this means is I have never heard of one coming with a 1969 Aluminum intake manifold or seen an aluminum intake from the factory on a car in 1970. Did Chrysler build one or two, you hear rumors all the time about 1970s having aluminum intake manifolds but I have never heard of a 1969 A12 coming with a cast iron manifold.

See if my info correlates with any other peoples knowledge;

I bought an A12 in 1969 from a performance dealer in Cleveland that my buddy sold for.

He specialized in the sales of MOPAR performance during the time when it was exciting. we also raced a sponsored car for them each year at Thompson Drag raceway.

I remember him saying that in 70, when the cast Iron manifolds started appearing, the 4 speeds got Al. and autos got Iron.

I never had this confirmed so it's hearsay, but if anyone was an ORIGINAL owner, they can chime in.

Just my memory, don't kill the messenger!! LOL

The reason I asked this question is I recently purchased a Superbird from an owner that owned it for 43 years. It is a 4 speed car and has an Aluminum Edelbrock 6 pack intake and was trying to figure if it was correct. The owner says it was on there when he purchased the car used. The carbs are correct for the car.

(They could have had either one, I think confused

The K frame date is 3429 which is Dec 21st of 69 so if what you say is true this could also apply as is the 4 speed theory.

I recall GG stating there were a few Superbirds found that came with Edelbrock intakes.

I know of a Roadrunner and Cuda that came with them. Both had SPD in early Oct, both happen to be 4 spds.
I asked the original owner of the Cuda if he changed the intake. His reply was no, that it was the original Edelbrock cast iron intake. He had no idea it was aluminum. Knowing the '70s had iron intakes, he assumed they were cast by Edelbrock out of iron. I know it was on there in 1975 when I first rode in it.

Bottom line...I don't see a way to prove a '70 V code came with an Edelbrock intake, proof would have to be more than the word of an original owner. The closest would be the original untouched motor still in the car, like the Cuda and RR I know of, even then it can't be for certain.

there have been a couple of rumors about WHY some late-Oct./early-Nov. 440+6 intakes are aluminum

supply or bad quality/porosity issues with cast iron version causing a shortage of usable parts shruggy

I know of a first week of November "scheduled" Challenger R/T w/18K miles - figuring some Actual Production Dates might help shed some light on the subject.

I've heard of aluminum intakes from Lynch Rd. & Hamtramck work what about St. Louis & LA?

Any pics of this bird? What color is it?

I'm the CARETAKER of Weinstats '69 440 'cuda registry and have 104 of the 360 cars to date. 84 fastbacks/20 coupes. Always looking for new(REAL M-code) '69 440 'cudas to add to the registry so drop me a note if any are found or known. This isn't a publicly released registry. Thanks, Dave

I thought I read somewhere (doesn't mean squat probably) that the A12 production was shut down early due to lack of aluminum intakes. If that's true, how would they end up on 70 model cars? They would have to be from Lynch Rd if they go them in 70, correct?

She's in primer on outer body, jams and under hood still original color of FJ5. Don't even ask about the hoopty rims, they have been removed as soon as it came off the trailer. Car has been with the same owner for 43 years but has set for years and needs the usual stuff to make it road worthy, brakes, fuel system and carbs rebuilt.

Of course its a Lynch Rd car SPD is B30 but K frame date is 3429 and caliper dates are 329 which I would imagine would give a close date of actual production. confused

Superbirds actual are pretty easy with their travel to Clairpointe documented

daily flow to/from Clairpointe

B30 = Nov. 30, 1969
3429 = Dec. 8, 1969
329 = 32nd week of '69 = Aug. '69 or (3299) Nov, 25, 1969

can you share VIN and/or fender tag info?

Both my four speed A12 1969 Runners had Aluminum Intakes, 1970 Cuda four speed 440-6 built around Late Oct. first days of Nov. Cast Iron intake, 1970 440-6 Runner four speed cast iron intake. The car I have raced at the Drag Strip 1969 A12 Super Bee late built car, motor was assembled in mid May of 1969 car likely assembled in June or maybe early July SPD of 426 does not tell date when it was built but will have to look at the broad cast sheet for more details and never looked at the other date codes such as K member. Looked at a lot of Cudas, Chargers, Challengers, and Super Birds and Runners and Bees in the seventies and all came with cast iron intakes. Never looked at a 1970 Fury.

Do not know why Chrysler decided to shut down the 1969 Plymouth A12 build so early and continue building the 1969 Dodges A12s.

I always read that all 69-1/2 A-12's got the aluminum intake and all 70 and up got cast iron. But I know Mopar and I am sure thats not 100% correct. Ron

Looks like it was built in the first batch.

Not certain what you are basing the "built in first batch" on.

If the VIN is RM23V0A170843 (the last # is hard to confirm in the photo)

From the Superbird production list is bird number 1679. This would place it towards the end of the run.
Further the date listed for this car to be received at the Clairpointe assembly facility is Dec 11 and shipped on Dec 12.

Again from the factory production list, the the latest date for Superbirds to be assembled and shipped are all Dec 17-18.
The original paperwork had a completion date for ALL cars by Dec 23, 1969

You seem to have a lot of knowledge or some facts about the build on theses cars. Where does one find information about these cars or is it years of searcher on your part?

I have some other questions on these cars and would like some clarification on other aspects of them being built since this is first time I have messed with a Superbird. Thanks for any info that has been shared. up

First question, is it the factory Edelbrock intake or is it the aftermarket version?
