78 Dodge PW, w/ 360.
Original problem that alt was no charging.
Installed new alt. Did not help.
Changed regulator & starter solenoid at same time.
It charges now, but engine will not shut off until it runs out of gas.
Pull off positive battery cable, still runs.
It has toggle switch for power to ignition & electric fuel pump.
Used to shut off at toggle switch till I change both parts.

What have I done?

Thanks, SLD

Your alternator is feeding your ignition.

Agree backfeed and/or crossed wires. As suggestion remove and inspect the bulkhead connector. Look for heat damage and/or burned connectors on both halves of the connector.

Here is an update.
The problem is attached to me changing the voltage regulator.
I installed the old one and tried an older one as well.
The engine will stop with the ignition and toggle switch.
But I'm only getting 11.5 volts charging.
Re-installed the new VR and motor will not shut off.
But getting 15v + charging out of the system.

So, why does this issue attached to the VR?
Could all 3 VR's be bad?

Thanks for you'alls help on this issue.

15+ volts will cook your battery over time.
Might need a zeener diode in there.
Did anyone modify the factory wiring?

In order to get the ignition to fire, I had to plug in a positive wire direct from the battery thru the toggle switch.
The engine harness is brand new from Dodge Connection.
I was made for the M880 military model.
The pig tail I wired to was on the harness.
If that is not wired up, the engine will not fire.
Any idea why the voltage regulator manipulates this issue?

It sounds like the alt output is tied right to the ign instead of going back through the ign switch. Course it would cause a drain with the key off also if that is the problem. When you put the old reg on its not charging so it will shut off. Just where is this wire running to that you have from the battery to the toggle switch ?? It sounds like it may be the problem ? Ron

Thanks for everyone's reviews and responses.
I finally focused on the root cause of all my electrical issues.
It boiled down to that I connected the main power wires behind the dash on the wrong posts.
Instead of connecting to the amp meter, I put them on the fuel gauge.
Once I made the change, everything works perfect.
Goes to show that a guy should stop working on his restoration after a couple of beers.

Thanks,

SLD
