I saw code N98 on the fender tag of a challenger convertible on eBay. Tag looked good but then I saw this code and, in over 40 years of looking at tags, I had never seen it. Was the tag a fake? But then I read that this some obscure 71-only code indicating an emissions label is present. Wow, I had never seen this. And an R on the VON as well. Car needs a lot of work but interesting. N98 is an emissions device for CA in 71. The reason I believe it is on the fender tag is because it required a hole in the cowl to mount the device.
Interesting, thanks. I wonder why no N95 if this was a California specific feature?

You could go on and on about what is wrong with the car. Interesting tag though.

the '71 CALIFORNIA N98 emission label was on the driver's side 1/4 window similar in appearance to the emission sticker under the hood - - here's a '73 version (on the windshield)

It shows how badly things were going and how quickly. We went from Scat back bees in the quarter window to an emissions decal in just 1 year! 1970 was definitely the panicle of the muscle car era. yet another example.

Odd.
I have the fender tag from a 71 N code Challenger that N95 on tag but not N98. I always assumed it was a CA car but I just looked up the registration and it did not have 71 plates on it
My other 2 71s are from Oregon and Canada I have the original plates on my 71 383 r/t N-code. It has N95. I don't believe it has N98. But I'd have to double check. I know it doesn't have the device on the passenger cowl as it wasn't cut for it.

maybe it was an early/late thing? the first "1B" fender tag I have with N98 is SCHEDULED 12/17/70 after that I have cars with N95 & N98, I have cars with ONLY N95 and I have cars with ONLY N98? A-body & E-body and all engines (/6 - 318 - 440+6 - HEMI) accounted for with N98 except 340. maybe it was a SMOG thing and ONLY required in the large population areas

N code Challenger Deputy. I always that it was a CA but the plate 1Dxxxxx which is 80s plate number

However BOTH N95 and N98 codes are on the buildsheet (all of them, I have 3 buildsheets from the car) The car was sold new from KC Dodge in San Fran, I purchased it from the original owner in the 1990's
