Ok, so I got the trans from my son's 1990 4x4 Dakota torn down and the small accumulator spring was missing. Is this something I need to worry about?

Yup, that's what my research showed. The FSM doesn't show it, but the FPM does.

Is it a 42rh or 46rh. Is it a V8 or V6? Not that any of this matters to your question. I'm still just trying to nail down which trans I have in my 91 V8 truck. 91 was still the LA series engine probably an A500. does pan look like the older 904 or does it look like 727 pan?
