They are there to prevent direct contact of the axle tube with the frame rails in the event of a bottom out. Not sure why your brackets would have yellow paint on them, the ones on my 72 appeared not to be painted or plated at all. After blasting I painted mine gray.

Is it a 440 or Hemi car?

I've seen the yellow paint on BB/Hemi E-Bodies with Dana 60 rear ends.

A quick check of the 72’ parts book does show a two different part numbers, one for the Dana equipped b-bodies and one without. Can’t imagine why the brackets would be different, the rubber block is probably taller to due to the larger size of the Dana’s carrier housing. Yellow paint could have been used to denote this change. Do you have a picture of the rubber blocks that were on those brackets?

Yes...
the paint marking is on the taller stop bumper versions.
The strap has a different step on these, IIRC.

I will get a picture of the actual rubber mounts and post it.

The mentioned e-bay seller’s (Mega Parts) web site has a little more detailed info on their reproduction axle bumpers. Pretty clear the Dana bumper is not only ½’ taller but is generally beefier all around. Anybody have any experience buying from them? Feadback? Thanks for posting the pictures; I picked up a couple of new wrinkles on the brain today.

Same here, I never would have tought that an axlw bumper could be different.
As far as Mega parts. I've bought from them before, great vendor, had no problems at all.
