Looking to see if anyone has successfully installed 295 65 15 Micky Thompson Radial Drag Tires in a 1962-1965 B-Body, with leaf springs in stock location? I am considering buying some and think they would fit my 1964 Plymouth Savoy as my current Hurst Racing Pie Crust rear tires are 11 inches cross section, and the MT tires are advertised with 12 inches cross section on a 8.5" rim. Also, any noticeable difference between the ET Street S/S tire and the ET Street R tire, besides the tread design? The ET Street tires is shown to weigh less than the ET Street S/S, but not sure if this is actually the case.

How much clearance inside & outside do you have now? It's not just a wider tire, it's about 2" taller, so the widest part of the tire is farther away from the axle centerline, too.

Measured my car yesterday, and I have well over 1/2" clearance to the leaf spring, and toward the quarter panel wheel opening, so they would most likely fit, but would be snug. The extra inch of tire diameter should be ok, the Hurst Piecrust tires are over 29 inches tall. Only concern really is the clearance on the outside top section of the wheel tub. Looks like the tire may rub slightly with suspension travel upward. Just wondering if anyone else has attempted this before with success.

I can tell you FOR SURE they wouldn't fit a 62. My 275/60 PRO required the spring to be pushed in to the side of the frae rail, and the wheel lip beat, and they BARELY fit.

Hmm, my '63 required none of that with the same tire and I have room to spare on both sides!

I have had 275 60 15's on my '64 Plymouth before, and they fit easy, with plenty of room to spare. Just wondering about the next size up 295 65 15, if anyone has squeezed in these big tires with stock leaf spring location, stock axle width, and stock wheel tubs?

I have 275/65/15 on my car now and I have tried the Hoosier QuickTime 295/65/15 with 4" backspace to clear the leaf.It looks like it will fit inside just fine but I know if the suspension moves up the outer sidewall will hit the fender tub.
I haven't tried to beat the inner panel in yet but I would really like to run the 295's

Yeah I think guys lump 62-65 cars together, but I don't think the 1/4 panel shapes are near close enough to call tire fit the same.

I will say though that I'm talking about the PRO275 on a 10" rim, which was considerably wider then the regular 275 on an 8" rim.

The 295 will fit MY 64 Savoy with a 8" rim with 4" back space but it might rub when the body comes down. the Hoosier has a 12.3" max sidewall width with a 10" tread patch.
I will try to drive it down the road when the weather gets better around here.

Thanks for your reply. I would love to see some photos of the 295 65 15 Hoosiers on your '64 Savoy. Are you running leaf springs in stock location? Stock wheel tubs? Stock width rear axle? What is the width and back space on the rear wheels are your using?

Hoosiers are 1/2 inch shorter then the Mickey's.

My springs are in the stock location, wheel tubs stock, rear axle is very close to a 67 B rear axle width. It was under a 67 Camaro with Moser axles shruggy It fit so I traded my 9" for it. I only have one tire and wheel combo so I could test fit it before I buy a pair of them. The rim is a Basset IMCA rim 8" wide with a 4" backspace.
I will mount the wheel and get a pic of it this weekend.

The ride height of your car and the stiffness of your suspension will be important - The inner wheel well curves inward above the wheel opening so it pinches the tire.

hey Gus, this is something i've also been anticipating.
don't want to mini tub my car, so i'm looking for the widest wheel n tire i can put on car. 285/65/15 4 1/2 b.s. seems to be the combo that i've heard. im have adjustable shackles, so maybe more is possible.

As soon as I get my rear end back together and my driveshaft is done I will get a pic of the tires on the car. Right now I'm getting the rear end re-tubed and trued up. Like I said already they BARELY fit and I'm pretty sure that if I didn't turn my shocks up to max they would rub the outside wheel tub.I think with a little massaging they would clear or if I would move the springs in and go with a 4 1/2" backspace wheel. I have 3/4" clearance to the spring with a 4" backspace 8" wheel.
Should have my junk back together in a few weeks and I will get a picture then.

Bringing this thread back to life. Wondering if Gus or anyone else has successfully used the MT 295 65 15 fit in 63-65 B-Body, with stock rear wheel wells and stock leaf spring location. Photos would be awesome.

I spent over an hour trying to find pics with no luck, but a 295/65/15 BFG Drag Radial on a 15x8 wheel with 4.5" backspace physically fit our '64 Savoy with stock location leafs, but it would not have been very driveable. The tire would have rubbed on the inner quarter panel above the wheel lips with any moderate suspension movement. I'll post pics if I run across them.

With that said, I believe the M/T ET Streets do not bulge as much as the BFGs did. (I mocked it up around 10yrs ago...when BFG's were the only ones widely available with that size.)

Found a few mock-up pics. Plenty of spring clearance, but I do not recall the inner wheel tub clearance anymore.

Please disregard the fact the tire is not in the correct direction...it was simply to see if they would fit.

Looks like 4.75 BS would center the tire better, but that outer lip would need trimming. Might likely still rub the inner wheelhouse on bumps & cornering, but could be drag-raceable.
I've run into the same issue with customizing the BS fitting that size into a Duster: not so much with the tub room, but centering the tire. Takes some cleverness on the opening.

I ended up buying the wheelwell lip rolling tool from Eastwood for my ‘69 GTX, and it gave me an extra 1/2” of tire clearance.

On my car I have the 295/65/R15 BF Goodrich Drag Radials on 15 x 9 w/4.5” Back spacing, and will change the tires to 10 x 11.5 Quick Time Pro Cheater slicks with tubes. I have the same setup on my ‘68 Super Bee, and I have more room as far as width, and could have gone with 10” wheels.

Your car is different, but you may have more room between the spring and sidewall, so maybe a little more back space?

Mark

Rear ride height will be a big factor.

My M/T 275's work really well and are centered in the wheelwell.

I experimented with flipping the front spring hangar to lower it further and both sides of the tire touched rhe inner and outer stock wheel tubs.

The Hoosiers that I had would no way be able to be driven even in the pits without rubbing the quarter panel so I ended up selling them and got some 29 X 9 M/T ET Drags. The sidewall was just too wide on the Hoosier Quick Times to fit without modifying the wheel tub or moving the springs in with a differn't off-set rim.

So I just have the 275 M/T SR radials for the street and my slicks for the 2 races I plan on running this year.
