I now have a 1998 Ram 2500 2WD as my daily. It has the chrome steel wheels that I don't like with new 245/75R16 tires and I recently bought four of the forged aluminum wheels (2002 vintage maybe) that are like the ones in the picture. These are just like the ones that I had on my 2002 CTD 2WD, but that truck had rear disk brakes and the 1998 has rear drums.

I know I should have checked first for fitment issues, but time and CL sellers wait for no man. My plan was to glass bead the wheels and have them powder coated and mount some 265/75R16s afterwards. So the question is, before I go out to the shop and play tire wrestler in the cold, are there possible fit issues in these stock wheels at either front or back on my 1998??

Haven't tried it personally but seen plenty of trucks with those rims.

I'd be more worried about the 265 fitting in front on 2wd. Maybe put the 245 on front and 265 on rear?

You'll need the right lug nuts for the center caps to snap on but iirc they are the same as older trucks.

Not sure about the aluminum wheels , but I had a problem putting the 16 x 7.5 steel wheels off of a 2001 2500 Dodge 4x4 on the back of a 1996 2500 Dodge 4x2. It all had to do with the 1996 having drum brakes and the 2001 having disc brakes on the rear. Seems like the wheels would not clear the out side edge of the drums. I think I talked to Rhino about this at a show a couple of years ago. Think it was a matter of having to cut the drums down to make it work , which I never did.

That is exactly why I am asking the question....

I had a 1999 Ram 1500 that I bought new with the factory aluminum 16" wheels and it came with rear drums. I found a set of 17" factory wheels from a newer Ram 1500 and bought them for that truck, had new tires mounted on the wheels. They fit the front, but would not clear the rear drums whiney

Eventually, I went to Jeg's and bought some 17" Americans and they fit, but I paid a lot more for them.

my buddy installed a set of those on his 99 2500 cummins 4x4 truck. he had to grind on the rear drums and if I remember right he had to also grind on the front hub assembly. around the tie rod area

My 2000 CTD 2500 4x4 had those wheels on it and didn't need any grinding etc

My 1998 4x2 truck has rear drums...did your 2000 4x4 have rear discs?

I just looked on Orielys website and it shows rear drums for a 98/99 dodge 2500 2 wheel drive. The drum has a Outside diameter of 15.54 and the size for my old 2000 dodge drum at 14.17

That is very helpful to know, since it seems the point of interference is fitting the newer wheel over the older brake drum down

I will do some more research and see if I can substitute the 2000 rear drums onto my 1998 rear brakes that would provide enough clearance to solve the rear problem up My truck may be due for new rear drums anyway and I actually prefer rear drums over rear discs and not just because I am old.

My research has confirmed that I now have a set of wheels that won't work on my truck whiney

It seems that the rear brakes on the '98 model are 13" diameter with a corresponding large drum and the 2000 model that those do fit have 12" diameter brakes, the drums are 1.34" smaller in diameter and a few other dimensions are different, too. I could spend money and time having the bell machined off the drums, just so the wheels fit or I could find some aftermarket 17" wheels that I can test fit at each end and be sure they will work with larger tires

Craigslist, here they come....

It's not that bad a job to grind on the drums to get them to fit your wheels. I can ask my buddy what all and wear he had to grind on his to get them to fit, if you would like. I know the 17 off a dodge truck like my 2010 2500 4x4 will fit on your truck with no problems. My truck has 14 inch disc on the front and back,

Actually, I have been down that path with my '64 Polara. When I first put the custom Dana 60 under that car I used some 10" brake drums that fit fine. Then I swapped to newer 10" drums that had the big finned bell and discovered that the bell hit the leaf springs because I had narrowed the rear to fit 10" wide Americans in the stock wheel wells....so I had to have the bell machined off and in the end I should have stayed with the other style drums because it made no difference in brake performance.

I think I will just move those wheels to someone else and get some 17" wheels and new lower profile (70 series) E-rated tires when the new 16" tires wear out...
